Star Trek Machinema Soft Re-Boot

For some time I've thought up an idea of doing a soft-reboot starting around the same time as ST:TMP, and would involve a massive refit of the USS Enterprise, but it would feature a different storyline.

Much of the crew would change, though many would either appear, or be mentioned in the storyline as there's only so much time a person would serve on one ship. The concept would basically revolve around the same theme as Law and Order where the institution is the same, but the characters periodically rotated out got promoted and so forth. Willard Decker would be the Captain because he's already an off the shelf character and he seemed to be a good skipper (especially in the novel) and was personally recommended by Kirk, Chekov would remain, though I'm not sure if Uhura or any of the others would remain.

While I haven't really worked out the storyline, but I think something involving one, or some of the following would be a great idea
  • The Romulans
  • An undercurrent of severe corruption in the Federation and even Starfleet
  • Some kind of unethical technological development (something like Project Genesis -- I'm not saying exactly that, but something that would create a furor)
  • First contact with an alien race

So, what do you guys think?
