Not to repeat myself but if anyone is looking for an example of a show that was filmed at 4:3 and successfully converted to 16:9 try watching the high def re-runs of Seinfeld. It mostly looks really good. There is the occasional shot that looks a little cramped.

If they did about the same job on TNG I'd be fine with it. I'd also be fine with a 4 x 3 frame as well. I'm just happy to be getting them in HD.
Not to repeat myself, but Seinfeld in 16x9 looks terrible. There are way too many scenes where it was obvious the show was cropped and it's worse for it. If that's what we'd get from TNG, I'd rather have 4x3.

Wasnt it already said that it would be in 4:3? Can we stop bitching about this now?

So assuming $50,000 per episode for the transfer, and 178 episodes, I make that just short of $9m to convert the entire lot. Let's also assume $10 profit per season set, so $70 for all seven. That's 128 thousand or so complete sets that they'll need to sell at least. Are they going to recoup their outlay in this economy? Probably, but what might screw it up?
  • They convert the episodes to 16:9 by cropping. People complain that information has been lost.
  • The leave the episodes as 4:3. People complain about the black bars.

Can they win?

I think its going to cost more than $50,000 per episode, but I also think they are going to sell well more than 128,000 sets.

^ To say nothing of syndication rights, including that Netflix deal, which I'm sure is no small amount of change.

And for an example of a show that was badly converted to 16:9, look at the DVDs of Buffy and Angel. No thought given during filming to it ever being shown in 16:9, even though in the early '00s, it was definitely a possibility. I've taken an example screenshot, but there are many more examples.

If there's a chance of this happening in TNG, I'd much rather see the show in 4:3, as intended. Forget cropping vertically too.
And this is why I want it shown in 4:3 as originally done. If there's stuff like this in the sides, then don't bother. I don't mind the space shots being 16:9 though. But if it has to be all one way or the other, 4:3 is my preference.

It'll make a fortune...STNG already sold for record amounts in syndication the second time around, imagine what an HD series with "new" goodies will go for!

I'd like to re-iterate for the thread that its its going to be 4:3...so why bother bringing up 16:9 again? That discussion is moot.

Yes. This this this. This guy, right here, that I am quoting in the box above these words, has the truth of it.

If it is possible to re-frame TNG for 16:9 they should do it - it can't hurt the show.
It can. That's exactly what it would do. It would be compositionally inferior if it was reframed.

(Which it won't be, thankfully.)

ETA: Apparently, The Digital Bits have confirmed 4:3 so phew...

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa197.html

The Enterprise sequence in the trailer on startrek.com implies they have cropped it to 16:9.

ETA: I guess they can crop and render as 16:9 from the scan for syndication as someone else suggested.

It doesn't help that numpties in the comments section on the trailer site say it was originally filmed in 16:9 and they are glad that this will be restored. What the hell are they smoking? Did they even watch the teleconversion sequence in the new trailer? The show was filmed on 35mm and the closest TV aspect ratio to full gate or Academy ratio is 4:3 as the Picard sequence in the trailer demonstrates.

ETA: If they do spend more than $50,000 per episode, we should get our money's worth.

I'm now thinking I won't be rushing into buying even the taster until I read lots of feedback.
I will definintely be buying it. I want to make sure this project get's all the support it can so they won't have a reason not to do it. Plus, I really want to see TNG in HD!

I think someone already posted this link, but comparisons of the likely difference in picture quality can be found here:

Anyone got an idea what the price of the taster set is likely to be yet?

The ILM shots from the pilot where filmed for widescreen and then cropped to 4:3, so you wouldn't lose anything. The same is probably not true for the rest of the series.

I'm pretty sure what we'll get will look even better. Those are just screenshots from a compressed video after all.
