This. I wouldn't have even posted about the other issues, but the errors with the DTS Master Audio are significant - a major cock-up. I really hope CBS do the honourable thing and offer a replacement scheme.

I'd be satisfied with a twenty dollar coupon towards season two.

I'm a little concerned about the increasing number of issues that are cropping up with regards to the season 1 release. I wonder what went wrong - a lack of proper QC? Rushing to meet a deadline? A little of both? Hopefully CBS will correct the issues and offer replacements. And as much as I want to get my hands on season 2, I hope the studio takes the time to ensure that no errors exist before releasing it.

On balance, I think I'd rather have a corrected set of season 1 episodes though!

The QC people probably just did the same thing the review sites did-- checked a handful of episodes where the video and audio appeared to be fine, and assumed the rest would be as well.

It was obviously a screw up, but I think it's an understandable one. And I seriously doubt it was anything the main team did wrong; it was just an error in how their work was translated to disc.

Ok, wow. I finally checked out some of Haven and even on my cheapo home theater system it sounds tinny as hell.

The 7.1 track, the DVD 2.0 audio, or both?

They really should let us the fans help out with crowdsourcing like mentioned in the thread started by Maxwell Everett. We would all love to help... Because we want it perfect.

Wow, that pic in the interview really threw me for a second. I've never noticed before that Tasha was wearing a different uniform at the end of Farpoint:

Wow, is that really from the episode? I never noticed that either.
Are you guys serious? That final scene always stood out to me for exactly that reason.

I'm beginning to wonder if expectations might be too high. It's starting to sound like people can't accept that the release isn't perfect in every possible way.

Is there ever any product that is entirely flawless? Overwhelmingly, this blu ray set is a vast and massive improvement (warts and all) over the flaws inherent in the DVD version. In fact I can't think of any piece of merchandise in the history of the franchise that offered more in terms of value and quality.

How some people can get riled up about minor limitations truly amazes me.
I've been praising these sets relentlessly since I got them (See my reviews of the brilliant Documentary that was 90+ minutes long) but these audio issues aren't minor problems. This are glaring flaws that took my enjoyment out of specific episodes. I'm just really hoping from something from CBS because I'm not sure if I can accept these sets at the $65 I paid for bad audio work.

Other than that, these sets have been extremely well done.

You certainly can't expect Master Audio created from 25 year old TV source material to compete sonically with modern movies. But within that caveat, I do agree the mixes presented here (the correct ones that is) are not as good as they could be. Some of Picard's opening Logs are quite harsh on the ear for instance, and without any boastfulness, I have perfectly balanced levels/EQ on a quality system.

Just spotted another VFX error. In Heart of Glory during the breakout scene the security officer is killed by an invisible phaser beam.
I watched the scene and I think it plays just fine. In fact the perspective actually makes MORE sense now, as the beam should have come from the middle of the shot and not the side anyway (since the Klingon was shooting from the corridor and not the brig).
I never noticed how wrong the phaser perspective is in Conspiracy before.

Shouldn't laugh, I know. People have paid a lot of good money for this dog's dinner of a release, and they deserve better.
I still can't say it was a lot of money. Cheaper than the DVDs were, with extensive restoration to pay for. If they'd charged more perhaps it could have covered more stages of QC and so forth.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R general discussion thread!

I've been watching the episodes in order and had not come across any audio issues until Haven, which I just finished.

There is definitely a problem. The audio is "hollow" or "tinny," as has been described.

There were times I was thinking it was getting better, or that I was getting used to it. But after coming into Haven from the previous episode, Hide & Q, it was quite apparent. And it was also very apparent during the holodek scene.

The plot thickens. Here's the list I've compiled of where dialogue can be heard in the mix (please correct me if I've made a mistake):

FL = front left
C = center
FR = front right

"Encounter at Farpoint" - C, FR
"The Naked Now" - C
"Code of Honor" - C
"The Last Outpost" - C
"Where No One Has Gone Before" - C
"Lonely Among Us" - C
"Justice" - C
"The Battle" - C
"Hide and Q" - FL, C, FR
"Haven" - FL, C, FR
"The Big Goodbye" - FL, C, FR
"Datalore" - FL, C, FR
"Angel One" - C
"11001001" - FL, C, FR
"Too Short a Season" - FL, C, FR
"When the Bough Breaks" - C
"Home Soil" - C
"Coming of Age" - C
"Heart of Glory" - C
"The Arsenal of Freedom" - C
"Symbiosis" - C
"Skin of Evil" - C
"We'll Always Have Paris" - C
"Conspiracy" - C
"The Neutral Zone" - C

***

I'll just note that I didn't bother putting my ear next to any of the rear channels to check. The only real troublesome one is the pilot because it is unbalanced and because it differs from the Next Level sampler... but the others in the middle there are strange anomalies as well.

Here's a proof for that.
A Screenshot of the Waveforms from S01E15 "11001001".
The Center channel is duplicated in Left Front and Right Front.
So the audio is parallelized and sounds kind of metallic with a slight reverb.
