Do movies really bring in significant new readers (or, rather, shift existing ones), though? My understanding is that--excluding discrete works such as Watchmen or Batman Year One--this isn't really the case. Could be wrong.

Speaking of Marvel, how's everyone liking the Ultimate version of Future Foundation? At least that's what I figure the white & black costumes of Reeds' followers are meant to imply.

An issue of FF was the worst comic I bought in the past year.

Well, except maybe Grifter.

So I assume it's bad.

Love those uniforms though.

Marvel is starting to close the sales gap...I predict they'll take over the lead by next summer. Sad about Jerry.

I'll give it until spring. With Spider-Man and The Avengers having movies (and related tie-ins) next summer, that will undoubtedly bump sales back to Marvel's favor.
I dunno... I believe there's a pretty big DC-propetry movie coming out this Sumer too.

No, they don't.

Of course, this might chance a bit now, since DC is now also publishing all their books in digital format (don't know about Marvel) and those are easier to buy. But since they don't publish the digital sales, we won't know/can only guess.

Marvel went same day digital a couple weeks after the New 52 started.

New readers? No. New readers are myths. Old/current readers branching out because of curiosity/nostalgia/because they are there? Much more likely. It is a minimal bump to be sure, but enough to shift the swing towards Marvel.

Doesn't quite compare to Marvel's offering with multiple characters to market.

DC's 52 brought in a bunch of new readers so it's not exactly a myth. It's just that movies isn't the avenue for building a new readerbase.

Really? I thought he was playing the Ultimate Version of the High Evolutionary rather than the FF.

While just on this board we have anecdotal proof of that with a few members I think it's not broadly true enough to support the spike.

The biggest thing it seems is they got existing readers of comics to try them again and/or try new titles. I know that is the case with me and most people posting in this thread, at SHH, at my LCS etc.

I had never encountered HE in my readings, but you seem to be right. I still tend to think of it as a bit of a mashup.

The High Evolutionary was the featured villain in the recent Silver Surfer mini-series. Which I found enjoyable even if it was one of those stories that did nothing to drastically alter the status quo.

Re: DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

We do have a Marvel based thread to talk about Marvel related books guys DC may be owning Marvel in the film department but comics sales wise they will come around and take it next year at some point. "The Dark Knight Rises" doesn't have any tie-ins as far as I know and most likely won't. The previous two films didn't really have tie-ins. "Avengers" will have tie-in mini-series....Bendis is writing one of them. Not to mention Marvel has a ton of offerings already for next year while we still don't know what the New 52 will hold next year in terms of well...anything yet. We're not sure about the second arc for books or any events. The only thing we're aware of is Multiversity. The "second season" of Grant Morrison's Batman, Inc starting. DC has yet to talk about the finales of the first wave so far. We'll probably get information as we enter the new year.

Re: DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

I'm sick of every year needing a huge crossover event. If anything, DC's proving you can sell comics without that crap.

I mean, at times I've read nothing but the main event, which proved the tie-ins are completely useless (Fear Itself). At other times, I'd entirely ignore the main event and read some of the better tie-ins, like the Day of Vengeance of Infinite Crisis fame, which led to the fantastic Shadowpact, and Final Crisis: The Legion of 3 Worlds.

Re: DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

I wouldn't say DC is proving that when we don't know what they're offering will be...and we know they're doing Multiversity which is a major "event" type books. They've also had a major event every summer for the last several years. Don't let them off the hook just because some of the New 52 are doing what they're supposed to do and sell right now.

As for events...I think Newsarama and Comic Book Resources recently did an excellent article on fan fatigue regarding events. If I find it...I'll post it.
