UK Riots - Contains Caprica Spoilers

If you havent been following the Riots in London and across England(not the rest of UK, yet) then please read up on them, to keep the thread conversation informed/flowing

Having been following the London and later England-wide Rioting and Looting on The News and via Twitter, Facebook, Blogs etc..

It was all being organised by BBM, Twitter, Facebook an' that.. and it reminded me of to the under culture of the V World Kids.

Did any of you get reminded of Caprica somewhat?

The Kids on the V-Club were doign what the wanted.. also those in the NewCap City..

In the final episode, Zoe's Copy talks to Clarice about people gettting divorced from Society and therefore not caring about its upkeep/bettering of it, knowing that they can get rewards elsewhere.. be it a virtual heaven or the seemingly (at the time) consequenceless looting and aquistion of Material Goods.

It should be noted that I in no way condone or am making excuses for the Criminality and think all those involved they should be dealt with harshly.

Re: England Riots

It's not like there weren't riots before the internet. The Rodney King riots are the first example that comes to mind.

Err..

Of Course there were riots before the internet. No one is saying that there wasnt.

Did you see the way the kids came out of no where.. the idealless anger.. pure criminality.. the reaction by the police and the establishment on the tv.. the way people were comming tho during the last few days. the way people were reacting to it.. how the shops on your high street in a fairly safe/quiet area were kicked in.. the way Ken an' got on TV and was trying to make sense of it all just to bash Boris.. how all the police were acting differently in the local area..and the feelings in the areas towards the rioters..? Thats what was referring too..

Was very different to anything that came before in Europe no Idealless Riots have proliferated like that before.. and no on was expecting it..

Re: England Riots

Caprica made it look all sexy & stuff. The London riots just looked pathetic. Buncha brainless kids.

Personally, I always disliked the way Caprica depicted v-world. I just didn't believe a mass people left to their own devices would make anything so aggressively hip. More likely, they'd make social media games about raising corn on Facebook. Or they'd invent TrekBBS. Or they'd go on a rampage with the goal of collecting consumer electronics. The usual boring, mundane crap that humans get up to. People just aren't creative, stylish or self-aware enough for the Caprica scenario to ever become true. It's like expecting haute couture from a herd of sheep.

What about those riots in France? People were trying to make something about them being an Islamic uprising, but it just looked to me like morons trashing the place.

Also, "idealess riots" does not strike me as surprising in the least. I've seen predictions made about it for the past several years, the kind of thing that is the inevitable result of a multicultural society devoid of shared national identity, Europe's inability to assimilate immigrant communities, economic disenfranchisement, general directionlessness and nihilism among the young (for instance, high rates of alcoholism in Britain have been widely reported), etc etc. Some folks no doubt are rubbing their hands in glee that their predictions are coming true.

Compared with Caprica, the London riots seem so much more true to life.

We didn't see the whole V-World. All we saw regularly were the equivalent of 4Chan and Grand Theft Auto. There were fairly dorky things too, like chat rooms (that bar Zoe and Dead Lab Boy met in when he was Live Lab Boy) and flight sims. And in the Greystone V-World Welcome Video, he was giving the example of playing an on-line golf game.

As for being aggressively hip, have you seen online profile pictures? Everyone makes themselves look awesome and interesting. They have pictures of themselves at parties or beaches or hang-gliding into the Grand Canyon, not anything more representative of what they're probably doing now, like them in sweats on the couch with a laptop and a bowl of cheese puffs balanced on their belly.

Bingo.

Yeah, there's probably people doing dull, pedestrian things on V-world like using its equivalent of Facebook. But that'd fall into the purview of the legal, 'normal' V-world; the series was largely interested in illegal subsets of the internet. Internet subcultures and the like.

I guess all I know are dorks because I can't think of any "awesome and interesting" profile pictures. I think of TrekBBS avatars as more of the standard for that kind of thing - geeky, injokey and obscure.

As for real-world illegal internet subcultures, what are they? All I can think of is piracy and kiddie porn, both of which are grubby and sad, and not glamorous at all.

I think we're talking about two different things. My thought is that stuff like these and these are a lot more flattering than your average driver's license or webcam photo.
