Going waay back to the original question, my only concern about digital comics is the same I have with e-books. They should be a compliment not a replacement. If too many lazy people see them as being a replacement (both in terms of having to pay for them - just like e-books I'm sure you can find "free" copies if you know where to look) that could cause problems for those of us who actually enjoy having the physical item - both from an esthetic and from a collector's point of view.

Unlike e-books, however, I don't immediately fear digital comics spelling doom for print comics or comic shops. But I am concerned that it might render print versions as "instant collectables". And by that I mean if Marvel, say, decides it will only print 1000 copies of Captain America because it does most of its sales in digital, you're going to see the same biting and scratching for those 1000 copies as you see when a limited-edition action figure or premium edition of a comic becomes available. And those who want to read the print version are going to have to pay through the nose. (I remember back in 1989 Mad Magazine came out with an edition spoofing the Tim Burton Batman movie. Even though the Mad was still available at the local corner store for $2.99 or whatever the cover price was, several comic shops started putting $10 on their copies, just because it had Batman on it. And guess what - they sold because people thought they were collectables. I wouldn't put it past some shop to start slabbing and jacking up the price on "rare" print editions of the latest issue of Wonder Woman ...)
Nothing about these Luddite ravings makes sense to me.

But they are a replacement, that's the whole point.

Barnes & Noble just announced their Nook Tablet (what everyone was calling Nook Color 2). Looks like they'll be countering Kindle Fire's DC titles with a slate of Marvel titles for the Nook. (mentioned halfway down the page)
It's like they're both trying to kill the comic industry...

You know, just about the last thing comics needs is a console war.

It is changing the business model, companies need to adapt. If they do go all digital they just need to be in a universal format all the readers can read them in. It also saves comic book companies money, since they don't have the cost of printing the books, or shipping them.

I think that I'll finally be entering the eReader/tablet world next year now that the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet will be available. DC going to the Kindle and Marvel to the Nook is annoying, though. My decision on which device to choose will be based in part on which comics I'd rather go with.

I prefer Marvel overall, but I'm more interested in their past issues than I am in current ones. I think read more Vertigo than either mainstream DC or Marvel, so the Kindle would probably be better for me, but it would also depend on the availability of Dark Horse and Image comics.

I don't really know how the digital comics system works; does Comixology offer comics from Dark Horse and Image? Will Comixology be supported on both devices?

Comixology does have Image comics. Pretty much how I keep up with Walking Dead and Invincible. Dark Horse has it's own app. Comixology has an android app, so it should be supported on both devices.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I was mostly wondering about Image because of Invincible. I've been buying it in trades, but once I buy one device or the other I'm probably going to start buying more individual issues digitally, mainly because I'm running out of space on my bookshelves and TPBs take up a lot of it.

Re: Digital comics are they worth it ? disscussion and comments:

well good new is that the nc and nc2 will support comixology and digital darkhorse. which mean for dc fans and nc owners can go through comixology to read dc comics.

jd on comixology would you happen to know the proper x-men reading order?

Sure, but not yet. It's probably gonna be a while before I get to reading any of them and I don't want to have to search back through days or weeks worth of posts.

^I would add Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run to that list.

The "Gifted" and "Dangerous" arcs take place before House of M and "Torn" and "Dangerous" take place afterward.

Jean was killed at the end of Grant Morrison's New X-Men run in 2003. House of M took place in 2005. That's a pretty good list you have, somewhat update to date.
