Carina Class Explorer

and now I do think these deserve a separate thread
the following are my posts from the group thread, and further updates will be in here

didn't think these deserved a separate thread

I felt like cooking up a new design, and this is the start of it
it's a Nebula class refit, decided to go with USS Endeavor (yeah, like the world needs another Endeavor)
this time NCC-82035
probably early 25th century, no uber stuff on it . . . just the regular assortment of weapons/shuttles etc
and of course the 'super sensors'

I like to think that after his time on Titan, Ra-Havreii went back to working on new ships, and the Nebula refit was one of the designs he pitched in on, and the Endeavor wasn't one of his personal projects, but used his template from other Nebula refits
that's just what came through my head while drawing this guy up . . . I fully expect the treklit powers that be to go a different way

well here's the pics

please pardon my lack of scanner
also the saucer oval in the top view wouldn't be visible under the 'wings' of the sensor sail
I printed the oval out of autocad so I could have a decent shape . . . oval is tough to do freehand as evidenced by the underside pic

since I can't make up my mind this is now the Carina Class instead of a Nebula refit

also can't decide on nacelle placement . . . need to do the front view to finalize it I guess

just watch . . . I'll rename it tomorrow

BolianAuthor and I are bouncing ideas back and forth, so at some point he'll be adding to this thread as well

Re: Carina Class Explorer

I've nailed down a size: L 570m, W 394m, H 106m
I wanted it to be between Galaxy and Nebula size, but I wasn't exactly sure how large it would be
if I kept the same saucer size as the Gal and Nebby it would be quite a bit larger than both

so in terms of where it fits role-wise, it does overlap with the Galaxy, Nebula, Luna, and Vesta
but it's not a new technology testbed like the Vesta class, or Luna class
It doesn't have many significant advances over the Galaxy class save for the sensor and science packages

Now that's an interesting looking design right there, should be good when it's done.

Re: Carina Class Explorer

started on the saucer details, and the main impulse exhaust
still to do are the escape pods, main shuttle bay and cargo bays, various hull details like emitters and windows and and and . . .

if you look close you can see the observation lounge windows just below the bridge on the bow

You know people are going to be bugging you about whether or not that top section is able to separate, right?

*oy*

Great looking design, all in all, I must say!

Cheers,

There will be no separation.
the placement of the main shuttle bay will preclude any separation.

I like the top view. It reminds me of some of the Sternbach art from The Starflight Chronology.

yeah, the early Nova ideas
funny thing is . . . I had completely forgotten about those until they were mentioned when I posted the early sketches

Re: Carina Class Explorer

Here's the latest:

just fleshing out with some details . . . got they pylons all figured out
you'll notice the large door on the top. that's for the shuttlebay which extends to the rear, so it's got an entry in the top and to the back
it can fit up to a 50x25m shuttle/small ship, not sure of the height
the little dot thingy by the bridge is a standard 6m shuttle
