Re: Green Lantern: Grading, Review, Discuss, Tracking, Sequel?

I don't think dark and edgy is really the answer. And while I'm sure comic fans would love more space action, I don't think that would work either. People already thought this one looked too much like a silly CG cartoon.

They probably just need a solid, well-written Earth-based story that grounds the character a bit better and makes people see that he's just as cool and badass as a Thor or Iron
Man (something I don't think the marketing for this movie really got across at all).

So, Green Lantern has yet to roll out in some other countries? Why? I thought things mainly all came out at the same time nowadays.

More emphasis on action? How about a little more emphasis on the (so far) shallow characters? I really doubt a sequel is in the cards.

There isn't a sequel in the cards at all.

For those still playing the optimist that a sequel will happen here are some numbers to keep your faith alive.

Green Lantern placed #19 this weekend after expanding into almost 150+ bargain theaters for the weekend and crossed the $115m mark domestic.
As it's roll out during August and part of September continues the international total has risen and it's WorldWide figure is now $176.6m.

Yes there is. [edit] Captain Craig posted the story on the previous page...but here it is again...

“We had a decent opening so we learned there is an audience,” said Warner Bros. film group President Jeff Robinov, pointing to the film’s box office debut of $53 million. “To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action…. And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.”

However, Time Warner Chairman and the CEO, Jeff Bewkes, himself recently stated that talk of a Green Lantern sequel is premature and has slowed the roll on this Green Lantern 2 campaign.

"Green Lantern did not live up to expectations; it fell fairly far short of those,” Bewkes said. When asked about possibilities of a sequel, Bewkes simply answered, “We will be deciding that in due course."

His(StarTrek1701) point was that it wasn't in the cards at all and it clearly is at this point...until they say no on a sequel...it is still in the cards.

Any property can be worked and reworked, but all there is now is talk and talk is cheap. If fans are waiting on more Green Lantern specifically, I imagine they might be waiting in vain unless the toys and other media in connection with the film and animated features show remarkable strength. Based on this film's performance alone I wouldn't expect much to happen anytime soon.

Well considering most of the "user reviews" sites out there have given it a pretty solid B grade, there is a chance that it can build enough new interest and buzz on DVD to justify a sequel.

It's not very likely, but it also wouldn't be the FIRST time something like that happened.

I could see producers thinking it safer to rework Green Lantern and risk another failure over trying a different character and risking failure. In the first, they can claim the particular character doesn't translate well to film and move on but the later course would tend to taint DC's characters more broadly when it comes to investment for film development.

That's like saying Tom Welling has a chance of being Superman in the movies until a casting announcement is made.

At least the marketing campaign has already established the Green Lantern character to the moronic masses...

Re: Green Lantern: Grading, Review, Discuss, Tracking, Sequel?

The point is that DC Ent and Warner Bros are still talking about doing a sequel. Just as Fox has been having internal discussions about a "X-Men: First Class" sequel. I have been on record saying that we will get a "Green Lantern 2". Unless someone links an article or I see something from DC Ent that says they are officially not doing a sequel, it's a possibility.
