I get the feeling if you combined all of TV Rickon's appearances you'd get a clip that's under five minutes.
Well, in the books he has maybe half a page of total appearances and is completely absent for at least 2 books.
I also like him more in the show. Every show needs its creepy kid

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Spoiler-Filled Discussion

Filming on the second season is due to start on July 25th, so the next few weeks should bring us a lot of casting news for the characters introduced next season. The producers have booked Alan Taylor to direct four episodes of the second saeson, which is great news since Taylor's episodes - "Baelor" and "Fire and Blood" - probably had the best direction of the first season.

Edit to add: and we have our first casting news for the second season. Natalie Dormer (best known for The Tudors) will play Margaery Tyrell.

Great news about Natalie Dormer, she was great on The Tudors.
A very beautiful woman.

I guess they're bumping up Margaery's age by a bit for the show, since it'd be a bit tough to pass her off as 16.

That's pretty consistent with most other characters so far, though.

They've bumped up the ages of all of the kids, though, so that's no surprise. Magaery Tyrell doesn't seem the most demanding role from the novels, but the books spend most of their time working around her, so I wouldn't be surprised if we get some series-original scenes, and I'd bet on one with Loras.

I'm eagerly awaiting Stannis' casting, personally.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Spoiler-Filled Discussion

I expect her part to be a lot bigger than in the books. She'll likely be in the thick of things in the Renly/Tyrell alliance right from the start. That'll establish her for the big showdown with Cersei down the road. I'm sure we'll get a lot of new scenes with Jaime as well since they'll need to keep his character more visible in the show than he is in the second book.

Awesome I love Natalie Dormer!

She shares that smirk thing with Loras

Oh, yeah, I have no problem with it, and it makes sense for television. Just observing.

Although child labor laws and other considerations probably motivated the TV change, I think George R. R. Martin has said that if he had the chance to make the child characters in the books a bit older, he would. Especially since the loss of the five-year gap.

That was more in regards to Bran and Arya and maybe Tommen I suspect. Margaery makes sense to be 16 as otherwise she would have been betrothed already, being from a rich and power hungry family.

Well, I don't think bumping her age up by a couple years would make that much difference to betrothal (and she's 15 when she first appears, not 16), but I imagine he was thinking of Arya, Sansa, Bran, and Dany, yeah.

There are a couple of ways to get around that in aging the character up. Someone at Winter Is Coming suggested it could be written that she's been married to an old invalid lord who never managed to consummate the marriage and that he's since died leaving her available for marriage again whilst still a virgin. That's not too bad. Another possibility is that it could be said that her family so favors and prizes her that they've held off agreeing to a marriage to anyone less than a king or heir apparent.

I'd go with this. Indeed, with the series having Loras prod Renly in the direction of kingship, the Tyrells may have had their eye on marrying Magaery to Renly and claiming the Iron Throne for a long time now.
