This is treading on "Avengers" ground and has nothing to do with "Thor". I'm not sure why you posted in this thread about other characters.

Norse mythology? Other than explaining where Wednesday and Thursday got their names, I don't think it was taught at all.

I suspect it's a more localized curriculum.
Well, "more localized" would be a misnomer, since I didn't attend high school in the US but in a different country. I'm sure high school curricula are a bit different between Italy and the US, but I would be surprised if there was no mention of Norse mythology, especially given a lot of people in the US have some Scandinavian ancestry and might be interested in their ancestors' culture (which isn't obviously the case in Italy-- Norman conquest of Sicily notwithstanding). As for other mythologies, I think we had at least a brief explanation of the religion of all the cultures we studied during history class, from Babylonians, to Normans, to Australian Aboriginals. We read a lot of mythological texts in literature class, too.

I'm more interested in what the central conflicts in a second Thor story would be than I am in who would appear in it.

The early but long-running comic storyline about Odin's opposition to Thor's relationship with Jane Foster is a natural for a movie story - it sets father against son in a very basic emotional conflict and contest of wills, and it's a love story - and really ought to be one of the major story arcs in the second movie.

I'm curious about not knowing what Midgard is, not knowing what the threat of the Frost Giants is and not understanding Thor's character arc and where and how he came to learn his lessons.

It was all either explained or incredibly obvious in the film. Were people snoozing?

I didn't mean to pick on Trekker about the mythology thing, I just found it curious that he would decide to bash the names as he did.
I wasn't so much "bashing" the names as I was just saying it's hard -for me at least- to make any connection or really understand the names of places and gods/characters when they're not names I'm familiar with, ones I can spell/understand and I even further made vague by accents. I realize they can't be changed due to the mythology aspects of the character just that it was hard for me to really understand what was going on when hearing unfamiliar names through thick accents.

An animated and VO'd sequence for explaining the realms, tree/whatever deal would've probably gone a long way of helping understand things rather than watching Thor sketch in some book while talking in a romantic, whispery, tone.
Just because it's futuristic doesn't mean it's practical.

Surtur! Specifically, Walter Simonson's Surtur arc.
I'm with you Sutur at some point.
I think though that if they did Sutur the general critics and maybe to some extent the masses might think it a cop out. A rehash of the movie just take out the "cold" bad guys and insert a "hot" bad guy.

I'm all for Enchantress showing up in some way, but again would her manipulation just be a "female Loki" to the masses. I think Thor 2(should it happen) needs to avoid the complaints of Iron Man 2 and feel different, not just fight "another armored bad guy"(but really that's IM's rogues but I digress).

That might be ok, if you made her more like Morgana from Excalibur. She's be to Loki what Evil Lyn is to Skeletor. Loki only showed powers of illusion, I'd make her powers broader and elemental. More witch like.

Karnilla the Norn Queen, who empowers the Wrecking Crew, whilst falling for Baldur should be the villain in Thor 2.

I'd actually love to see Valkyrie and the Enchantress as well. As for who could play Valkyrie, I wouldn't mind seeing Yvonne Strahovski in the role.
Yvonne Strahovsky could play either role, but you'd need a second Nordic blond for whichever one is left.

For folks wondering, the real point of change in Thor was when he found he couldn't lift his hammer anymore and Loki told him that Odin had died/he couldn't come home.

It finally all began to sink in just what his reckless arrogant warmongering had done to him and his loved ones, and they would all have to live with the consequences for the rest of their lives. THAT was when he finally realized "I have to start acting differently and not strut around doing whatever I want. That's what destroyed everything for everyone to begin with."

Of course, half of that was caused by Loki's lies, but then again the events of the movie wouldn't have happened if not for his harmless prank.
I don't quite agree.

All Thor learns is that he went against his Dad's wishes, and Dad kicked the bucket after kicking him out and kicking Mjolnir away from Thor and the other Asgardians. And that now thanks to his little visit to Jotunheim (Did I say that I absolutely loved that they used the names? And the world tree business. And *loved* Odin appearing on Sleipnir. Too bad we don't get to see Fafnir) Asgard is preparing for war against Jotunheim.

He doesn't truly understand why Dad's "appeasement" policy is perhaps(?) better option for a King of Asgard to take. In other words, he doesn't understand the "Discretion is the better part of valor" lesson or about diversity or any such thing at that point. All he knows is that his name is mud in Asgard, dear old Dad is dead and they are all preparing for war with the friendly frosties. He doesn't suspect *anything* of any *hardship* that the war might cause to *anybody* else (including Asgardians). Which *I* think is Odin's point. But I'm ascribing reasons here to what Odin says in the movie. The movie doesn't really say why it was important to both Odin and Laufey (to a lesser extent) to continue the truce.

In fact, by the end of the movie, I don't think Thor realizes that Loki is Loki Laufeyson. Loki comes out and tells him he's not Asgardian and he still says - you don't know what you are saying and then of course, they fight like all brothers do...

Two other questions/thoughts re Mjolnir -
  1. I was under the impression that Mjolnir can also be used to open portals to other dimensions. I think it's part of the Marvel comics "uses" for Mjolnir. Is it that Mjolnir in the movie can also perform this function? Is Thor going to get "back" into the Avengers movie this way? Or is he going to discover Loki's pathways out of Asgard? or a new way (somebody else (Loki?) summons him to Earth?
  2. We get some great close-up shots of Mjolnir. In none of them that I could see does Mjolnir have the strap that we know exists in the Marvel comics. It's this strap that Thor is supposed to use to "twirl" Mjolnir. So how does the movie-based twirling happen? Please don't tell me that Thor was twirling without a strap!?!
Just some more thoughts.
