The Poltergeist movies

So in a fit of insomnia the other night, I tuned in to one of the cable movie channels showing a Poltergeist marathon.

The first movie is/was a classic... It was scary, funny, cheesy and told a good story...

The second film had much of the same "spirit" of the first film, but I feel it was hampered by the usual sequel "must be bigger and louder" treatment.

The third movie, while it had its moments (I had forgotten that a very young Lara Flynn Boyle was in it), it's mostly forgettable and tragic, considering Heather O'Rourke died before post production. It also suffered from some plot holes that were hard to ignore.

But as I drifted off to sleep after it was over, I cast my mind toward what would the family's life be like now, some 20+ years later... I find myself wanting an update on the family and yet another situation that finds them on a ghostly adventure.

A fourth story could be problematic considering the franchise has a pretty tragic history with the death of three principal cast members taking place during or between filming.. As I recall, this also hurt the marketing for P:III as Tom Skerrit would not promote it because he didn't want to appear to be trying to capitalize on O'Rourke's death. Plus, Zelda Rubinstein died just a few years ago.

But I would love to see how a (recast) Carol Ann has grown up and how the hauntings and her clairvoance have affected her life since the events. There had been talk a few years ago about a P:IV or a reboot, but nothing much since then. If they could get Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams back, that would be icing on the cake.

I love Poltergeist, but I don't think I've ever seen the third one. I don't know if I'm particularly interested in seeing more, but who knows, it could be good.

You know a remake of the first film is inevitable. This time the ghosts will be BIGGER and SCARIER!!! And the kid eating tree will be CGI and scream like Godzilla!

Re: The Poltergeist movies

^^ And that's just what I hope doesn't happen... I HATE that we live in a reboot society, but i'm all for continuing the story years later if a compelling script can be written and it's not just a money grab. All too often we get hastily thrown together "bigger and louder" sequels that forget the spirit of the original. Maybe it's my age (41), but I WANT to see Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams in those roles again.

A remake is horror itself! I agree that a continuation, likely maybe with the original actress now with a family of her own being spooked would be best.

Re: The Poltergeist movies

Just watched the two sequels for the first time a few months ago - yay for Netflix Instant!

Yeah, the first is the best, but if a continuation came out, I'd be interested. Not a reboot, though. The horror reboots (Friday the 13th, Halloween & Nightmare on Elm Street) have all been dull & pointless.

I only own the first movie and it is fun and scary at the same time. You don't see too many movies that hit the balance like that. The second wasn't too bad the thrid was just terrible.

Wouldn't mind an updated movie..but only if the story is right.

That would be best. But considering that she died in 1988 at the age of 12 that ain't gonna happen.

Pretty crazy movie; it's a bit too "in your face" to be truly scary for my tastes, but there are some great scenes.

And I honestly think this is part of the reason why we haven't seen any real traction on getting a continuation or a reboot off the ground.

After Heather died, the cast was very reticent about promoting part 3, which didn't help the box office returns, especially since a stand in had to hired to film her post production shots.

Add to this, the fact that the actress who played the older sister in the original was killed by her boyfriend before filming for part 2 started and then the guy who played the creepy preacher died in the middle of production for part 2...

I would imagine everyone felt it was just better left alone.
