Couple a posters

Couple of posters I was playing around with, all done purely in Photoshop a few days ago when I was just killing some time. In a similar minimalist style as the "Corbomite Maneuver" poster I did some months ago. Unlike that one, these are not "movie posters", no credits or anything...

and

And before MadMan1701 asks....no the ships can't be any bigger!

The "Corbomite" poster from a few months ago:

Very nicely done. I dont think they have the impact of the Corbomite poster as they're a little more simplistic, but they're still very well done.

Are you sure?

I really like the COTEOF one... really great. I feel like the Doomsday machine one could use something else in the background, though... maybe some big rocks?

Re: Couple a posters

I think the Doomsday Machine could benefit from being shown head on
right now it just looks like it could be a square rock with one side on fire

excellent execution
I love these!

Constructive feedback here:

Corbomite's is awesome, nothing needs changing in it at all. Perfect!

The UFP banner in City might benefit from being traced from as authentic a source as the swastika. This is given that the two symbols have a parallel function in the poster. (Alternately, maybe the swastika could look more "drawn by hand".) As you have it, at the least, the "U" is off (I don't think the banner stars are necessary, and just fixing the U might be enough). See here and here for source material and references.

Also, I wonder whether the starbase(?)/cityscape might more closely resemble Starbase 11 just a wee bit more (but not too authentically!). Unless you want it to be more like the relatively more generic cityscape seen in the background of The Conscience of the King and The Cage.

However, in any case, the concept of the City poster is brilliant.

I agree that a front view of the Doomsday Machine possibly might be better, like it's coming to eat you. I think the side views of the Enterprise and Constellation look a little too amateurish, by comparison with the Corbomite rendition, especially given the random angels at which they are oriented.

Thanks for these!

Great work!

But, if I might make a suggestion? In the "COTEOF" poster, I think the Guardian should definitely be in there somewhere, as should Edith Keeler perhaps; with McCoy's Hand (?) shown reaching out to save her?

Then again, what do I know?

Re: Couple a posters

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! I've been going through a lot over the last few weeks and forgot to check back in. My intent with these was to keep them simple and do them completely in Photoshop....i.e. actually do the entire creative process in Photoshop without any photo manips or anything. I've been in a few restaurants/cafe's where I've seen works of art that are very simplistic, yet they just emanate a very cool vibe.

So that's what I was attempting here. Also, anyone who's followed my Trek stuff knows that I tend to avoid the typical Trek flavor and smooth, streamlined imagery, and that's not always to everyone's taste. Plus I make it look old...sue me.

Backstept, you're right about TDM looking like a "rock with fire", but I had a specific layout I wanted to do, and when I was done, I toyed with the idea of a head on view. But using the simplistic style I wanted, I couldn't visualize anything I thought would work. Plus I wanted to have the two ships in, with one going in and one attacking.

Originally TDM didn't even have the "fire" part, I added that to give it some menace and because it looked exactly like a giant, non-threatening rock. And the downward angle add's a "heading towards hell" vibe. Sorta. And don't ask me which ship is which because even I don't know the answer!

I like the almost "children's story book" like look of it. I did this one before the "City" one, and generally tend to prefer it over that one for the sheer simplicity of it.

In the end, I decided that these aren't really for the non-fan, and that the fans would be in the know about the elements being presented.

Willsbabe, thank you! I was wondering if anyone was going to dig it as is. You've made my day!

Corporal Captain, thank you for the detailed critique! Your insight on the symbols was spot on, and I had the same thoughts when working on them. I did actually download and image of the UFP symbol, and knew that the "U" was off. Sitting here today, I don't know why I didn't correct it. Plus, as the swastika is super easy to create using basic shapes, it does look to....perfect. I'm thinking of making it look a little more "handrawn". I'm glad you've not only noticed the lack of stars on the UFP banner, but think it's okay without them....that was on purpose because I didn't want it to "overpower" the swastika so to speak.

The future city at the bottom wasn't intended to look like anything from trek. Just to be a future city created with basic shapes.

Thank you for the compliment as well. I wasn't prepared to hear "brilliant" when I posted these.

The ships do look more amateurish in TDM poster than CM because they are done completely by hand, whereas in CM, I traced the ship on a white layer and pasted it in. As for the front on view....see above.

Publiusr, I have yet to see "No Country For Old Men", and I'd be all down for doing a grindhouse poster...but when I think of grindhouse posters I typically think of awesome paintings with sexy chicks, explosions and macho dudes. I can't paint LOL! I may not be the best person for that even though I'm totally down with the idea.

Tin Man, I had already come up with the concept and posted it before I even thought of adding the Guardian, but have an image in my head for a second poster for this ep. That is indeed McCoy's hand, his simple gesture changing history....Edith was an important figure in the altered timeline, but it was McCoy's simple gesture that created that altered timeline. However, I had toyed with having the silhouette of Edith in the space where McCoy's hand is.

Again, thanks for all the kind words everyone! I hope to have some more done in the near future.

Funny you should mention Edith in silhouette that's exactly what I was thinking!
