Image of Gollum's cave, with Martin Freeman as Bilbo. You can't quite make out any details on Freeman, but the cave looks pretty cool.

How the fuck should I know? You tell me. I just know that "fluid look" sounds like video to me. I mean, I've seen what VidFire can do to an old T/R. It sounds like the same sort of thing. I'm prepared to be proved wrong. Is this film going to be in 3D though? I doubt I'll bother then...

Any chance we could get this merged into the appropriate thread, mods?

I'm really interested to see how these movies look at 48 FPS. It's not something I'd ever really considered before, as far as films go, but I'm looking forward to it.

I actually remember Roger Ebert talking about 48fps years ago, like maybe over 10 years ago. He was pushing it as an alternative to digital filming.

Looks like they're shooting straight scope. No super35 non-sense this time around.

I assume it will also be released in a 24fps version so other theaters can also show it, right?

I'm curious to see how high frame rate movies look, especially since games that run at 60 fps have this fantastic, fluid look to them.
In other words, stuff will look like videotape rather than film. Sounds like a great move to me.
Entirely wrong.

This is good news. If guys like Jackson and Cameron continue to champion new tech like this and 3D, with their incredibly successful records, the industry will follow suit sooner or later.

No, this kind of movie is increasingly distributed digitally now and by the time The Hobbit is released they'll be able to book as many digital theaters as they need to.

As far as mass commercial entertainment is concerned, film is going the way of vinyl.

Nope. Think of it in the reverse, my video camera can shoot at 24p. If I show you footage from it you'll probably be able to instantly say "That's video," and you'd be right. The differences between film/digital cinema cameras and video cameras are a whole lot more than how fast the pictures are flashed in front of your face.

Not going to lie. The diary brought tears to my eyes. Even through all the darkness this production has had to endure. It seems as if the sun will shine the brighter. All is well in Wellington and for this single moment all is well with the world.

Absolutely brilliant! I remember well the anticipation I felt during the production of TPM -- and damn if I'm not at least as excited about The Hobbit.

AWESOME!!!!

It feels like 1999 again!

Damn PJ and his people really GET IT. They know what fans want and they know how to whet our appetites in providing wonderful things like this. They do not have to do ANYTHING in advance of the release but it's a way of giving back to their fans while simultaneously raising awareness for the films.

A poster on AICN said it well when he he posted that that diary was better than several films he had seen recently at the movies!

Is it December 2012 yet?!?
