A Behind the Scenes Video of Star Trek Phase II

"The Daily" put together a little behind the scenes video about Star Trek Phase II. It captures pretty nicely the tone and atmosphere on our set. You can find the (five minute-ish) video here:

Have you guys ever considered having someone do a dedicated behind the scenes documentary during production of your episodes? I was thinking something like what Lucas did during production of the prequels? Film several hours and drop fifteen minutes segment every month or so until the release? I dunno, it may not possible on a fan production, but ti would be sweet.

Re: A Behind the Scenes Video of Star Trek Phase II

Sure. We've done that. We've grabbed hours and hours of BTS footage while we're shooting an episode and then cobbled them together into BTS documentaries and then we put them up online, generally on soemthing like YouTube. (Evidently you haven't seen any of them.)

For example, here's one from about a year ago. I posted about it on the TrekBBS over in this thread:

http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=121272

(You can see the video here. It's about 20 minutes long.)

http://vimeo.com/11692514

We don't get too ambitious on them. They can be an enormous time and resource sink. Basically, it would be the same post-production people working on the BTS documentary that would be then get pulled away from their work on the real episode. Staffing-wise, we're spread pretty thin on our volunteer staff as it is. We're lucky we get our episodes out as "fast" as we currently do; I can't (and wouldn't want to) imagine how long it would be between release dates on our real episodes if we tried to tackle BTS documentaries in the interim. We'd probably end up having to release our regular episodes in separate Acts-- with five years between each act.

In the case of this segment from "The Daily," they had their own crew shoot it and do all the post. So it didn't slow us down too much. Oh, except for the transporter effect of the production crew dematerializing at the end of this little video. *Our* VFX guys actually put together the transporter sparkle thing for this shot and provided it to "The Daily"--and then "The Daily" guys didn't even use it; the video simply shows the people "fading out" in the transporter chamber. So, there's some wasted time on the part of our poor VFX guys right there.

Anyway, we hope people like this BTS video from "The Daily."

Glad to see it's still being made. The lack of updates on the website was starting to scare me.

Ya know, I had forgotten about the one from last year. I thought it was great. What I was referring to, or trying to, was maybe doing some kind of 3 to 5 min update monthly or what have you. It need not be shot with a crew or special equipment. Virtually any handheld camera would work from miniDV to iPhone. The updates don't even have to be earth shattering. Anywho, just glad to see things progressing.

NO! Work time should be focused on the episodes, not on updates. You need something else to watch while you wait? Come to Star Trek Reviewed, and watch what is being released by other fan film makers. Have you watched The Multiverse Crisis? It's my favorite of the less-known TOS-era fan films.

It is really more about staying connected to the project rather than being entertained.
