How long are we going to keep this thread around for now that the review and discussion thread has been around for a few days? There's not going to be really any more news or anything regarding this film? Unless we're keeping this for a non-spoiler review thread or something?
We could always keep this going as the news thread for the sequel.

As for Lex Luthor...

Too good looking.

A few years back I saw Alfred Molina with a shaved head, he was the spitting image of the 50s Luthor and the Byrne Era Luthor.

^John Shea and Michael Rosenbaum haven't exactly been smacked with the ugly stick either. I think Billy would be an excellent Lex.

Re: Superman (casting, rumors, pix till release)

The 3-day opening for Man of Steel is estimated at $113 million, setting a new record for a June opening. With the Thursday night numbers included, it's made an estimated $125 million. The audience was 56% male, compared to 61% male for Iron Man 3.

Heck, Gene Hackman was a rugged leading man in his day.

Actually, he probably would have made a good Superman back in the day. He was properly heroic as the Phantom.

Man of Steel, directed by Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, debuted to $125.1 million at the Father's Day box office to score the top opening of all time for June. That figure includes $12 million grossed Thursday night from special Walmart screenings, putting the actual three-day figure at $113.1 million.

It’s now the largest Friday June opening ever. “Our CinemaScore of ‘A-’ with the youngest (under 18) and the oldest (over 50) age categories both rating the film an ‘A’ should certainly generate strong word of mouth as we continue our run in the heart of the lucrative summer play time.”

Looks like this version should have legs for a decent box office run.

OMG. I really like that. Like, wow. I loved Spacey as Luthor, but Billy Zane... I can see him as the corporate monster genius billionaire... Wow.

And Byrne's Luthor, I agree, is also the best.

The time when Billy Zane might have been cast as Lex Luthor is long gone.

Yeah, I thought he did a nice line in playing an old-fashioned earnest hero in the vein of Reeve's Superman in that movie. And at a time when the likes of Keaton, Kilmer and Clooney were content to let their Batsuits provide their physique, Billy got properly in shape to fill out the Phantom's purple cossie.

You're almost certainly right, but it's still fun to speculate. Remember when people thought Jude Law, who has a bit of a young Terence Stamp about him, might be a good General Zod? I'd say that whoever plays Lex in any sequel or threequel to MOS will be someone we never saw coming - who would have guessed Liam Neeson as Ras Al Ghul, or Heath Ledger as the Joker or Michael Shannon as Zod?

^It's not like they need to get a big name in the role to put bums on seats though, is it? Michael Shannon isn't a box-office draw, nor is Kevin Costner the big name he once was. Zane only really had two big hits in his career, Dead Calm and (obviously) Titanic and in neither of those was he the major attraction.

Not that I think he'll play LL in MOS2 but I think they'll cast who they want in the role, regardless of that actor's box-office friendliness.

They'll either cast a big name or an interesting character actor whose work is currently winning plaudits.

I hear what you are saying that Superman is relatively star proof--as in they don't need a star to sell it. But, I could see them using a "big name" for the role of Luthor. Be it someone with real acting chops, like Shannon, or a big name. I think it would be to good of a PR thing for Warner's to pass up.

Like Brando as Jor El. Or Crowe as Jor El.

It could go either way.

That said, the box office success will give the team enough cred to make WB's give them freedom of casting.
