He was once slated to appear as Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: First Class but had to drop-out due to portraying Andrew Jackson in a musical. I guess the guy has some presidential inclinations.

When I saw his mug shot, I wasn't quite convinced. But then...

Yep. He's the man for the job. A very well developed sense of Presidential-level absurdity.

And as a nice bonus, he looks a lot like a young Liam Neeson, so we can watch both Lincoln flicks while maintaining a seamless illusion of canonicity.

There was a report today from Trent saying that his role was meant to be a cameo and a surprise. So I guess the media got it leaked or something.

Reznor clarifies (AV Club):

He had been considering taking on the project at the time of the media leak but “hadn't made up my mind completely, because various aspects of the project were changing”—although he admitted he still felt the need to give credence to the rumor earlier in the week, as “at that moment I thought I would be doing it.” (He adds, “Confused yet? Apparently I am.”) Anyway, it’s a moot point now, as Reznor has confirmed he will be neither acting in nor scoring the film.

"Basically, I came to my senses, realized that this project is asininely stupid, and pulled out before my dignity became permanently tarnished, much like David O. Russell and that Pride and Zombies abortion."
