Killer Wave - DVD

My friend Angie K has a stack of bad scifi movies to watch. Last night, we watched Killer Wave, which is an almost three hour film about a conspiracy to weaponize the ocean by firin' missiles into it & creatin' targeted waves.

Tom Skerritt was the only actor I recognized in it, and his guy killed himself...I made the comment that he committed suicide just so he wouldn't have to be in the movie anymore.

Angie and I agreed, though, that there was too much bad melodrama & not enough waves killin' things.
If this was only 1.5hrs or therabouts I'd have put this in my queue just for the sheer lunacy of the conspiracy plot.
Twice that length though and I'll just take your word for it. I'm not opposed to the concept "so bad it's good" or "is it as bad as they all say" but at 3hrs I'm willing to trust it's bad.

I think it may have been a two-part miniseries originally, but on DVD, its insanely long.

70. Be Kind, Rewind - C+. Mostly pretty stupid but had a couple of funny parts. Loved the 2001 parody.

71. Black Swan - B-. Fantastic visuals abound, but I thought that the story was ultimately too predictable. Natalie Portman is incredibly sexy in this movie.

72. Howl's Moving Castle - B+. The third Hayao Miyazaki movie I've seen. Not quite on the level of My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away which I regard as masterworks in the genre, but still quite a competent film.

Let Me In [C]

Just boring. Let the Right One In was alright, but I'm not a fan of the remake. I've really wanted to try and find the awesomeness in these adaptations that everyone else sees, but I just can't.

I was in the mood for a laugh last night, and started with the documentary about Conan O'Brien's "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour". Sure, there were some laughs in it, and I wish I had been able to go when he rolled through Austin, but mostly it was about what happened with NBC, his feelings about it, the thought process & development of the tour & time spent on the road, with bits & pieces of the stage show thrown in here & there.

So, from Conan I went to Steve Harvey, and a stand up performance done in front of a Christian audience in Atlanta, Georgia. Pretty funny, but the best part had to be how he didn't curse through the whole thing...came close a few times, but managed to make it through the hour plus without doin' it.

I had passes to get into the Footloose remake with my friends Angie & Ted, but we didn't go, after all.

After gettin' back to their place, I wound up watchin' a Mel Brooks movie...and yeah, only one word of dialogue in the whole thing, and its spoken by a mime. Go figure. A few too many Dom DeLuise is fat jokes before he really got fat...but yeah, still worth watchin' at least once for the sight gags & slapstick.

The Secret: David Duchovny plays a man who's wife and daughter were in a car accident. The wife dies and her consciousness ends up in the daughter's body. I thought it was really good, though Duchovny's character should have been a little more creeped out when his wife came onto him while in their daughter's body.

Last night I watched Robert Rodriguez' Machete. While not a terrible film by any means, it most definitely is a Robert Rodriguez film and as such I found it mostly enjoyable.

Kevin Smith - Too Fat for 40 - Netflix Instant

After the first special, and years since I watched The Kings of Comedy, I watched the other Steve Harvey stand up special available on Netflix, Still Trippin'. He got to curse in it, unlike the one filmed at the Christian event in Atlanta. And I'm not sayin' he has to curse to be funny, but it didn't hurt.

Last night, Angie & Ted were runnin' late, and I just said, screw it & watched a movie about a race horse. Didn't care for it much at all.

Then I started a From Dusk 'til Dawn marathon, since all three are on Netflix. The first is the best of the three, but that's still not sayin' much. The second had way too many camera shots where the camera was put inside of stuff lookin' out at whatever (lots of "from inside a vampire's mouth" perspective shots). And the third, a prequel, didn't even make much sense, especially the twist after the credits.

And then I watched the Kevin Smith special...and dozed off. Seriously, people pay to see this dude live? I like his movies, but I can't listen to him just talk without fallin' asleep, apparently. May try to rewatch it later, but yeah...

Tonight, I'll be at a free screenin' of Dream House! YAY!

86. The Queen: A
87. Public Enemies: B+
88. Drive Angry: D
89. Red Riding Hood: C+
90. Fright Night ('85): B

Last time I saw this was circa '92/'93 during a USA Up All Night type showing. Having seen the remake I felt inclined to rewatch the original. The film literally made no impact on me as a vampire film. Until the remake came out I had long since forgotten about it as a vampmire movie. Didn't resonate like say Lost Boys. In it's defense it's not that bad but I'm sure when I was "watching" it my full attention wasn't on the film then.

I liked the nuance changes they made in the film to update some characters attitudes. They removed Jerry's 'familair' who was his eyes/ears during the day for the remake.
The character of Peter Vincent (Rodney McDowall) had a great line. His show was being cancelled and his rant to Charlie was that "today's kids aren't interested in vampires but lunatics in masks chopping up virgins." A great line mid-decade referencing the Myers, Vorhees and Freddy phenom in slasher cinema!!

Some of the affects, especially one transformation sequence looked straight out of the Thriller video. Keeping that in mind as you watch it it's a fun B-film. The other fun part of the movie is seeing that Amanda Bearse is the 'hottie' girlfriend of Charlie. Best known as Marcy from Married with Children she still doesn't look hot even when they are trying hard with her wardrobe.

I just watched the original last month, while in Houston! Still haven't seen the remake, though...or the sequel.

I enjoyed the remake. If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer it's highly likely you'll enjoy the remake. The screenplay was written by Marti Noxon who had a big hand in many Buffy stories.
I've not seen the sequel either. Wonder if it ties into Peter Vincent's new formula for the show....aliens!!!

Dream House - free screenin'

After my birthday dinner last night, I got into a late screenin' of Dream House, the new movie with Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz.

A ten o'clock screenin' on a Thursday night means the studio doesn't want reviews in the paper on Friday mornin'. And after seein' the movie, I can see why they would want to avoid that...

The trailer for Dream House gives way too much away, and when the reveal comes up in the movie, folks in the audience laughed. And the movie went downhill from there. Durin' the climax, a character does something that shouldn't have been possible up to that point, which just ruined the whole damn thing for me. And it didin't help that the whole mess happened because of one guy's stupid ass mistake.

At just under an hour & a half long, Dream House isn't even worth the cost of a matinee.

I've got passes to see Machine Gun Preacher, The Ides of March & Footloose next week, and hopin' to get one for Real Steel since a friend of mine wants to see it.
