Mad Men Season 5 Greenlit

About damned time.

Despite not having a deal with Mad Men creator-executive producer Matt Weiner yet, AMC is officially moving ahead with a fifth season of the Emmy-winning period drama, exercising its option with the series' producer Lionsgate TV.
They'd be morons to do anything that would jeopardize the show. If it weren't for MadMen the network wouldn't have Breaking Bad or anything else.

Hm. Without Weiner on board, is this really something to look forward to?

Isn't this supposed to be the final season anyways?

Just give the fucking creator whatever he wants because he is the one who made the network!

Is it? I hadn't heard anything about that...but I haven't been keeping close track. Does anybody have a link one way or the other?

I haven't heard anything suggesting that. And the fact that the deal AMC is working on with Weiner is a 2 year deal would seem to indicate it's not true.

I just remember, I think it was season 2, that the creators said they would like 5 years. Obviously things change.

Yeah, but it could collapse.

Though Weiner is poised to become the highest-paid showrunner on basic cable, we hear that he is objecting to three things AMC/Lionsgate are asking for: integrating product placement into the series, cutting 2 minutes from each episode's running time in favor of more commercials and eliminating/reducing two regular cast members to save money. Weiner is resisting all of the above. “This is their storied franchise, and they want it shorter and cheaper, with fewer actors and more product integration,” an insider said. “The negotiations are about to collapse as a result.”

Due to that, I think this smells of a bit of network arm-twisting, to try to scare Weiner into conceding to their demands by implying that he's not necessary to the continuation of the show. If he calls their bluff and walks over it, I'll obviously walk with him.

Of course, he could always agree to a compromise including a cut to his gargantuan predicted salary, some era-appropriate product placement (I mean, it's set at an ad agency, and they use real products anyway) in exchange for not shortening the show and retaining casting control...

Since when has product placement not been a huge part of this show? Airlines, Utz potato chips, Heineken.

He's asking for $1.15 per episode. He's replaceable.

No he's not. It'a an auteur show, not some cookie cutter CSI clone. I don't want to watch Mad Men as run by some network-beholden scab.

I do agree that the product placement thing seems to be an odd sticking point given that they already do it, but forcing him to axe cast members and shorten the show even more are legit points of contention, and if that's why he's holding it up, then good on him.

Even more? He already gets more per episode than 99% of the shows out there. I don't see a big deal in him having to conform to standard shows that have to air in a 60 minute timeslot.

He made the network, give him what he wants. However I think he is holding out knowing he won't get to keep the length of the show, but maybe a minute shorter, but the cast members is a joke.
