I saw it at the L.A. International Film Festival a few weeks ago. Thought it was good, but not excellent. The concept has great potential for an anthology series, although that will never happen.

I'm very interested in seeing this, but I have no idea when (or even if it will) it might make its way to where I live.

Fox Searchlight has picked it up, so it will probably make it around the country, at least in art house theatres.

A number of shows and movies are using this theme. Aside from this and Melancholia, we've also got The Event, Smallville and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

If she doesn't fight the Man-Beast or at least the Perfect Order, I'm bound to be disappointed.

Weren't we supposed to get that last year? When nothing happened I thought it has been cancelled.

This looks interesting, but I'm going to wait and Netflix it when it comes out on DVD. I'm really starting to wish there weren't so many movies that look good coming out this year.

Melancholia is coming out in November. I kinda have no interest in this movie. Do the two earths collide? I don't get.

The second Earth acts as a metaphor for second chances more than anything else in the film. The movie is primarily a character drama about two people. Not everyone's cup of tea, surely, but it's well-executed for what it is.

Re: Another Earth - Grading & Discussion

The movie is out on DVD and I saw it last night. I thought it was "above average", not excellent. As Harvey said, this movie is primarily a character drama. It's about a young woman named Rhoda who gets accepted to M.I.T. at 17, but gets into a car accident which puts a man (played by Tom Cruise's cousin William Mapother) in a coma and kills his family. After four years in prison, she gets out, takes a job as a janitor and decides to enter this man's life as a cleaning lady, hoping she can muster the will to confess that she was the one responsible for the accident. Set against the backdrop of all this is another Earth in the sky, which was discovered on the night of the accident. The first sighting of this other Earth was also responsible for Rhoda being distracted and causing the accident, something that becomes important to the story later on. This movie isn't heavy on scifi. For the bulk of the film, this other Earth only appears in the occasional visual and gets talked about in radio and TV broadcasts with some occasional speculation from the characters themselves. The importance of the other Earth in the story only comes into play towards the end when Rhoda wins a contest to visit this other world. I thought the movie was a bit artsy at first, but the drama quickly grabbed me, and the fascination with this other Earth kept me engaged right up to the end. The movie also provides a lot to think about and discuss by asking questions and dropping hints rather than explaining or showing things outright. It's the kind of movie that gets better after it's had a chance to sink in. In the end, Another Earth is a good little independent scifi film and it's worth watching.

Wouldn't there be massive tidal waves and gravity problems and all sorts of weird shit with an Earth-sized planet appearing so close to us?
