Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Teaser Poster released

Disney has released the teaser poster for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and it certainly is a tease -- so much so that the name of the film doesn't even appear on the image. Neither does the name or visage of the movie's bankable star, one Johnny Depp, a.k.a. Captain Jack Sparrow, for that matter. In fact, the only writing on the poster is the film's May 20 release date and a subscript alerting moviegoers to the fact that Capt. Jack's fourth big-screen voyage will be in both IMAX and eye-patch-popping 3-D.

To be fair, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise is so well-known at this point that one look at the image is all it takes to know what it's promoting. And one could argue that the skull on the poster is Depp's face, minus the devious smile and the flesh, of course. Either way, we're sure this is just the first of 73 character posters, bus wraps and billboards the studio will be releasing in the push up to the movie's 2011 release -- so there will be plenty o' time to get Depp's smirking face out there.

Looks great! I can't wait to see the movie.

Disney is putting the first trailer with Tron: Legacy.

Looks good. Here's hoping Tim Powers makes a zillion dollars off the book sales. That book deserves to be more widely-read, even if the new movie is only loosely based on it.

Looks exactly like every other PotC teaser poster.

Can't wait for the movie though!

Agreed. I finally finished it a few weeks ago. It's a great read. I particularly like the way his puppeteering skills come in handy towards the end. I also like how it integrates real world people & events but completely changes the presumed context of them, particularly with regard to Stede Bonnett.

But for the book to become more widely read, it needs to become more widely published. Even the used paperbacks are going for over $11 on Amazon. I paid $25 for my book club hardcover.

I don't know who owns the rights at the moment, but I imagine that somebody (maybe Disney) will reissue it when the movie comes out, probably with a new movie tie-in cover.

Lord knows that's what I would do!

(Unless Disney is afraid that people will be confused when they discover that Jack Sparrow is NOT in the book!)

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Teaser Poster released

Considering Disney hasn't unvaulted Tron to cross promote Tron Legacy, I think it's safe to say that they don't know what they're doing over there. (It's a real Mickey Mouse operation, isn't it? )

It's actually a Terminator sent from the future to kill Jack Sparrow. Will and Elizabeth's son followed the Terminator into the past to try and protect Jack.

Yeah, this franchise really loves the skulls and bones look. I really like all the posters.

Yeah, I agree. Actually, looks like like it could be a poster for any pirate movie. Actually, what Dream has posted, it seems that as the series progressed, the posters looked less and less distinctive. They could have at least put Blackbeard on the poster.

Be glad you didn't see the last one - I liked the first two, but At World's End completely ruined my enjoyment of the second movie.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Teaser Poster released

Though overall the same basic design, all of the teaser posters have their own special design that relates to their respective film.

Curse of the Black Pearl -- the first, so the basis for all to come

Dead Man's Chest -- torches instead of crossed blades, tying into the cannibal sequence; voodoo Jack doll, tying in with Tia Dalma; a change in the skeleton's hairpieces (reflecting changes to Jack's costume)

At World's End -- bones instead of torches or crossed blades, tying into the death theme; Oriental characters, tying into Singapore and the use of the Empress; again, a change in the skeleton's hairpieces (reflecting changes to Jack's costume)

On Stranger Tides -- back to crossed blades (going back to basics, as TPTB have said they wanted to do with this film); metal alloy skull, tying into the Fountain of Youth/Elixir of Life, the composition of which is often said to contain mercury or silver; again, a change in the skeleton's hairpieces (reflecting changes to Jack's costume? Dunno... haven't seen any good pics of his costume yet)

It's a franchise about pirates! What else would they use but skulls & crossbones?
