CRTC denies MuchMusic's request to play fewer videos

MuchMusic's desire to delve further into "lifestyle" programming and away from music videos suffered a blow today when the CRTC denied an application made by CTV (the station's parent company) to amend its broadcasting license.

Wading through the legal speak in the decision is a bit of a pain, but chief among CTV's requests was the desire to reduce the percentage of music video programming that the station shows from 50 to 25 per cent. According to CTV, "music videos no longer distinguish the service as they are readily available through other sources."

My hope is that this ruling and the recent announcement by MTV USA that they will be playing more videos and cutting back on all of those stupid reality shows will have an effect on Much Music/Much More Music to do what they use to do; if not, then CTV should shut down the whole operation, sell off the building at Queen and John to AUX TV, and let them take over music video in Canada (the pop music/reality show bullshit can be shown on a new channel called The Pop Reality Nonsense Channel, or something like that.)

Yep, serves them right. Sometimes the CRTC is a good thing, such as the fact that our Space channel still is mostly Sci-Fi. I'm tired of reality shows being everywhere where they don't belong.

I remember when I used to watch music videos on Much\MuchMore. Been a while, to be honest...

Makes you feel kinda old if you can remember the days where MTV and the like were actually about music.

Muchmusic used to rock so hard. I remember the good old days when their countdown was one of the most important things in my life. I cared so much about which songs were advancing each week, who was number one, who cracked the top ten, etc. They really made me believe all of that stuff really, really mattered.

They had excellent special music-related shows too, like the Intimate and Interactive in studio concerts and Q & A sessions, and "the spotlight" where they'd play interviews and music videos of artists in chronological order (sometimes in two parts just to be thorough). I've been going through old tapes of this kind of stuff I made as a kid and teen. I'm thinking about putting some of the stuff up on Youtube someday, but I'm afraid they might get mad at me for copyright infringement. Does anyone know how that works?

Put 'em on YouTube (if you can), and fuck CTV. Maybe that will make the company wake up and put back into MuchMusic what they took away.

Put that stuff on Youtube. It's a treasure trove of history.

I remember the days when MuchMusic was the first channel I would watch in the morning. New Michael Jackson videos were an "event". The days that Weird Al took over were always something to look forward to. It's too bad that the internet has made this kind of channel useless. It used to be such a big part of my childhood.
