I don't think the general public, who made STXI the success that it was, know or care who Rick Berman is.

I think you seriously underestimate the number of times those you had watched Star Trek previously have seen this film.

I don't think it was so much that it wasn't Berman but that it was J.J. Abrams. Name recognition for Lost and all that. If Lost had tanked I doubt as many people would have seen Trek. However, Lost was a hit and served as free advertising for the movie.

I'm not. The same film would not have come out if Rick Berman had been behind it. The needed drive and creative effort needed for this movie just wasn't there anymore with that team. This film had the right blend of action/adventure and pop culture. The previous film mixed those elements poorly.

Now, if you're saying that if Rick Berman and company somehow produced this movie and that it would have been shot down, I disagree there as well. First Contact was a Berman and company effort, and it was very successful. While the anger, frustration and dislike from the fan community has been rather excessive in their vocal displeasure with Berman and crew, there are legitimate reasons why such displeasure exists. Nothing occurs in a vacuum.

Great music
The sound track is stirring and the main theme strikes just the right balance of being new yet keeping the Star Trek feel.

Though it may be a catchy tune, "Enterprising Young Men" can not match the excellence of The Doomsday Machine theme.

Skydive
A fantastic scene which shows the makers trying something different with Trek.

"Something different?" You do realize that an orbital skydiving scene was planned for Generations, and that we actually do see orbital skydiving in an episode of Voyager?

The uniforms
Did anyone honestly think they could pull off the original costumes in a way that didn’t look cheap and unbelievable on the big screen?

After seeing the movie, I know they can't.

Genuinely funny
Definitely an area the TNG outings fell flat in this movie has some great lines.

Um, what? I'm not saying the TNG movies ever succeeded with comedy, but this movie's attempts at humour were just painfully painful.

I enjoyed the hell out of it....so I took it for what it was: a rollicking, kick in the ass, good time at the movies, with a little Trek provenance thrown in, for good measure.

I'm old (and wise) enough to realize it can't be all things to all fans -- especially to a lot of fanboys who tend to lend it a credence of reality, and try to justify it's logical place in Trekdom, as if any of this were somehow real, and not science fiction, for Christ's sake.

It is what it is, and stands on it's own.

I remember we decided to go check it out in IMAX before it was too late. We expected the crowds to have thinned by then but were floored when we walked into the auditorium and it was full to the brim! We had to choose; trade in our tickets for another time or sit down front. We went for it and had such a blast!

Both are good pieces of music, though.
As a theme "Enterprising Young Men" beats the slow, dark (but fitting) TDM-machine music by a longshot.

If Berman had made it, it probably would have been as dull and bland as most Star Trek made under his watch.

In that sense you're probably right. If the same plot, cast, and characterization had been done with Berman Trek dialogue, cinematography and action sequences, it would have been a failure.
