Favorite original (EU) Clone Wars villains?

By original, I mean not in the movies but introduced as part of the many Clone Wars novels, comics, and of course, the micro-series and current CG series.

Ventress is the most prolific, she made her debut in the comics but has pretty much appeared in all Clone Wars media. Based on AOTC concept art, she is mainly a thorn in the side of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and in at least one continuity, is responsible for Anakin's scar.

Durge-Mainly appearing in the comics and micro-series, Durge is a strange Bounty hunter type who is apparentally immortal.

Cad Bane-The Duro bounty hunter introduced in the Clone Wars TV series.

Alto Stratus-A comics villain, mainly from the jaabim saga.

Ziro the Hutt-The Truman Capote type Hutt from the pilot movie and TV series.

1. Ventress: I've always been a fan. She makes evil so seductive. I hate that she never becomes a Sith (even though her fate has never been revealed).
2. Sora Bulq: I liked how the comics added more depth and complexity to the Clone Wars, creating even a mini-Jedi schism and Bul'q fell into the dark.
3. Durge: Far more badass than Cad Bane, IMO. How Anakin ended him was one of the best moments of the Clone Wars.
4. Ziro: Didn't like him at first, but I came to appreciate him a lot more in the last episode.
5. Pre Vizsla: Loved that darksaber.
6. Dark Acolytes: Liked these guys in general because they could provide some lightsaber on lightsaber action against the Jedi.

I'm just getting into this stuff so I don't even know who all those people are:

Ventress - Eh, so far just another cookie-cutter darksider, though with an interesting depraved-Barbie-doll look like she was mangled by the bratty kid from the Toy Story movies. Makes me wish they'd actually give the darksiders a bit of character depth...

Cade Bane - I appreciate that he's a clever opponent, but a bounty hunter type motivated by money is never going to be my favorite.

Ziro the Hutt - Bizarre and hilarious, so he gets my vote.

So who's the zany pirate guy from Clone Wars who has that rat-parrot thing for a pet who perches on his shoulder? He held Obi-Wan and Anakin hostage and then later fought them in a Seven Samurai homage.

Who is Alto?

I'm not crazy about any of them but I'm liking Cad Bane more with every appearance. He's dangerous and competent with a sense of humor that is not goofy.

Cad Bane is awesome. I've always loved the bounty hunters part of the SW universe.

I will still vote for Count Dooku whether it's movie or cartoon. Christopher Lee rules.

I find Dooku annoyingly cardboard. I'm sure Christopher Lee could do a lot with a more interesting and complex character. Makes me wonder why he wanted the role in the first place. I guess big-time movie roles dry up at his age.

Absolutely agree, too bad he did not make it in the live-action movies. Great action-figure for the kids too.

Ventress. I found the character's original designs to be fascinating in the episode ii art book and I think would have been a far more interesting character than Dooku had Lucas chosen to use her.

It's a shame that he sometimes comes across as 2-D when he had the potential to be a pretty interesting villain. I do think there is a bit more complexity to him, courtesy of the comics and books. From what I recall, I think Dooku has an anti-alien bias (a precursor to the anti-alien policies of Palpatine's regime) and actually wants to be a Sith Order or army and believes in the war, for that end. He doesn't believe its all just a ploy by Sidious to entrench himself as ruler for life of the Republic/Empire. He's repulsive and evil, but not just evil for evil's sake.

I wish he hadn't been a Sith Lord. It's not like they use the name Tyranus all that much anyway. I would've preferred that he have been a disaffected Jedi dupe of Sidious, manipulated into seceding because he really wanted to change the Republic/galaxy for the better and not install some Sith Order.

To be fair, I'm certain Dooku definitely believes that Sith rule would be better and its not dispelled, IMO, that he doesn't think the Republic isn't corrupt so some of the things he says in AOTC might not be just crap to turn Obi Wan or at least misdirect him. Which of course if it was misdirection, that's thrown out the window as soon as Dooku whips out his red lightsaber.

I enjoyed the latest Clone Wars episode because it showed him somewhat in a different light. At least among the Confederates, Dooku is a 'fair' leader.

I like his voice and the way he calls Palpatine "Mister Chance", but I think it's unrealistic ( for example ) that Obi-Wan and Quinlan Vos together failed to successfully apprehend him.

Re: Favorite original (EU) Clone Wars villains?

Does Boba Fett count as a villain? I just watched the Clone Wars episodes dealing with his quest for vengeance as a child, and found the depiction to be remarkably nuanced and sympathetic, maybe because the writers have full latitude with him and aren't constrained by having to fit him into continuity, which is just more evidence to support my view that they should be allowed to overwrite continuity - I'm sure they could make a lot of improvements. Whenever they're allowed out of the continuity straightjacket, they do a nice job, first with Ahsoka and now with Boba.

Boba Fett has just rocketed to the top of my best-Star-Wars-villain list (and after years of scratching my head at his incomprehensible fanbase). I'm very curious what the Jedi plan to do with the kid - he's too young to be held accountable for his actions but too embittered not to be a continuing danger. His story is like Anakin's and Han's mashed together. I'm pretty sure we haven't seen the last of him...

From what I recall, I think Dooku has an anti-alien bias (a precursor to the anti-alien policies of Palpatine's regime) and actually wants to be a Sith Order or army and believes in the war, for that end.
That would be an improvement, and I agree, it works better if he's not a Sith. Why would a Sith concern himself with the petty racism of letter mortals?

Re: Favorite original (EU) Clone Wars villains?

About Sith and racism?

It's a good question. I think the idea of anti-alien racism was introduced into SW to explain why the Empire was largely staffed with human beings (albeit white males, but that's another conversation). I thought the explanation was a good in-house reason and I could definitely see Palpatine using racism to further his agenda, a divide and conquer strategy. However, it appears that Dooku, from some of the EU stuff, appears to actually have believed in it, though that didn't stop him from allying with aliens to achieve his goals.

On one hand I can see racism/racial bias as being something most Sith lords wouldn't actually believe in because they come across to me as the ultimate individualists. No one is more important than they are. No group, unless its fellow Sith, and for the most part, the Sith have always been portrayed as multispecies. In fact the original Sith were an alien race who later interbred with Dark Jedi, the original "Dark Lords of the Sith" if I recall my SW history correctly.

So perhaps Dooku's bias is a fatal flaw, one of perhaps many that made him unfit to be Palpatine's apprentice. He was truly nothing more than a placeholder, a dupe to rally the Confederacy around. With Palpatine, I can't say that he was personally biased, though he used racism to further his agenda, which would make him a racist on top of his other crimes.

Re: Favorite original (EU) Clone Wars villains?

Bane is as effective as I wish Boba Fett had been in the OT, but he lacks the moral core Fett's grown in the EU and now in TCW. Regardless, he is the show's most effective villain.

Ventress has done pretty well for herself in most appearances I know of, even when she loses (which is most of the time) she puts up a pretty good accounting of herself and unlike certain generals doesn't run at the first sign of a fair fight, or unless she's totally outmatched, really. Her standing up to Yoda in the very first episode of the current show I think says miles about her character. Had Narec not died I expect she would've made a hell of a Jedi.
