Looks like the portions of it you download work out to ~42MB. Bear in mind the game is updated frequently (once every week or two) and that's going to be a few megabytes each time. Most of the 40-odd megabytes are sound/music files, and those don't change much. The binaries make up less than 4MB of the total.

I have no idea how much bandwidth online play uses.

Savegames are fairly small as well. My explored area is pretty extensive and is only about 16mb.

Edit:

No wonder the files are small. Look at the size of a player skin!

Here's a few shots of the world I started on a few nights ago. Here's my initial settlement, including the tower I built out of an existing island, hence the random dirt and sand in it. And yes, I did forget to remove a bit of the dirt "scaffolding" when I was building the spire.

Also, the island in the background is where I'm now working on a larger castle.

Bedroom at the top of said tower. Cozy.

Looks good. Love the checkerboard pattern, it looks almost quilted. As for the stray block, just use some sand or dirt and jump-drop your way up there. It took me awhile to figure out that holding down the SNEAK key lets you hang over the edge of a block without falling off.

Game nearly gave me a heart attack today. Theres a wooded area atop my cave where I can go up in the mornings to collect arrows and feathers. Theres a spot atop the staircase where Creepers have ambushed me in the past, so theres a large crater there with a single layer of dirt blocks covering it. Well, I was wondering why I hadn't seen a Creeper in awhile, when finally I ran into one. I jumped back, andit exploded, opening up the hidden crater. Apparently the game had been glitching and the buggers had been spawning underground. I look up, and there are three of them coming at me! I probably could have dove off the cliff into the bay, but panicked and machine gunned them with my bow instead.

Just wish I'd had the presence of mind to hit the Print Screen key.

Actually, they are supposed to spawn underground. All that's required for a monster to spawn is that it be dark (below a certain light level) and be a minimum number of tiles from your position (I think 40?)

There are some designs out there for massive underground mob traps that make use of those principles.

I keep forgetting about the sneak key. Probably because it didn't exist until relatively recently, though.

Thanks for the tip, though, that should help stave off the fear of falling and dying when working on tall towers.

And I do enjoy this texture pack, called Jolicraft, I believe. I'm a fan of packs that make the cobblestone into nice, regular blocks. I hate the rough and unfinished look of the default graphics.

The sneak key is awesome, totally essential for building things like roofs (unless you just have dead awesome reaction times, which I do not.)

I'm using the default textures right now but I'll probably get myself a custom Painterly Pack again soon. I just haven't done that since the bed update came out.

^ I used to use the Painterly Paint too, but I think it's slightly broken under the current version, as I understand it.

Also, since you mentioned it, I have to say that I love the beds. The option to skip over the night when I'm in the middle of a big construction project is fantastic.

The beds have become very useful to me. I keep one at the bottom of the quarry I'm digging out, so when it gets dark I just go sleep. When I finish digging out a level, I pick up the bed and start digging out the next, always digging a spot for the bed first.

A word of warning on the beds. It doesn't take care of anything aggressive that might have come out at night, so you have to be careful.

^Be careful sleeping in the open. From what I've heard you way wake up with a creeper or a spider right next to you!

Yeah, I discovered that once when I went to sleep in a castle with an incomplete roof. I'm not sure it would be any more shocking to have a zombie wake me up in real life.

Yep, discovered that that the hard way as well. I had to build a pretty hefty dirt wall around myself before the skeleton wake up calls stopped.

I really hope that someday the game adds some sort of lost ruins, or hard to find items scattered around the map. One shortcoming of the game is that unless you need cactus, clay, or sugarcane, theres really not much incentive to go out exploring. Just admiring the scenery doesn't seem worth the risk.
