Re: Minecraft

I think I've seen a few Yogscasts but I have no dog in this fight, so to speak. Kind of silly to think even the Minecraft community has politics now.

Yeah, no kidding. It seems a little above the belt, you know? I mean, there's always been squabbling and complaining on the official forums, but nothing like this, and it's kind of sad to see that it's happened, but I guess on the other hand, it's what happens when you make yourself a public presence.

Simon and Lewis finally come through with a very calm, and reasonable response.

And a Youtube clip to go with. Yep, a couple of real stuck-up douchebags here.

Its starting to sound like perhaps Notch got some bad information about what went down. Heres hoping he's man enough to admit he made a mistake.

But remember kids, never post on the internet when you're exausted or hungover.

I agree in part. I do love the CTM-style maps, though (Complete The Monument, most often 16 pieces of wool) pioneered by Vechs: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/...ies-%E2%98%A0/ There you can break blocks and do whatever you want to succeed.
Yeah, those are good. I've been watching Guude and BdoubleO recently and those maps feel closer to the spirit of Minecraft as you can play them however you want. I considered giving them a go myself, but I realised that watching people die over and over again is fun, but doing it myself would be infuriating.

Eh, to me it comes across like Yogscast felt entitled to something.
I can see both sides to this. On the one hand, Mojang were making a loss on the event, so if the Yogscast did ask for money to show up then it's a little iffy. On the other hand, they are the biggest celebrities in the MC community, and celebrities don't show up to sci-fi conventions without being paid, so it's not that unusual. At the very least they have a case for wanting some compensation for the flights and hotel room.

Also, while Minecraft was already a hit when they started playing it, it's more than possible that their absurdly popular videos, which frequently reach Youtube's front page, have helped sell a couple of hundred thousand more accounts. It's a mutually beneficial relationship for both parties and it seems weird that Notch would be willing to sacrifice that, as well as the goodwill of his fanbase, based off of hearsay.

Re: Minecraft

It's starting to sound like there was a lot of signal-to-noise ratio, likely the cause of the confusion, at least that's the way the apology that Cutter posted came across.

Re: Minecraft

Plus it was Mojang s first time running a convention, and the Yogscast first panel. So I'm sure both sides did things wrong. Mix in too much partying and lack of sleep, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Anyone whos been to many cons knows that things rarely go smoothly the first time.

Re: Minecraft

I have no problem with either Notch or Yogcast in this "controversy". I wansn't there, I have no idea what happened or not happened.

The "fans" was quite vicious though. On both sides. I thought that the thread about Lydia/MinecraftChick on Reddit was quite disqusting, to be frank.

Yeah, I saw Guudes test on how many silverfish a server can handle.. Although "Nightmare Realm" isn't the most interesting map Vechs have made (the favourite is still Legendary). I will start my LP of Super Hostile 1: Sea of Flame II tomorrow, I think. I did a bit of Sunburn Islands on 1.7, but stopped when 1.8 came out in fear of Endermen destroying the tunnels under water. One glass block missing, and there's drowning ahead.. They should be nerfed enough now to not destroy the maps, though.

Anyone without a life (i. e. no one around here, I assume.. )should check out Cilantrogamer on twitch.tv. He streams (mostly) Minecraft about 40 hours/week.

Re: Minecraft

Yeah, exactly Cutter. Things never go smoothly the first time around, as it's the first time it happens and you never know what to expect, especially in terms of audience.

I'm amused by the fact that they brought their own security though.

Re: Minecraft

Some people did, but they were largely downvoted. The most upvoted comments focused on why they felt she was unsuitable to represent Minecraft, as you can read here. I have no idea who she is as I've never seen one of her videos, so I have no axes to grind, but it is highly questionable that someone with no experience was hired to organise a convention based off of the fact that she made Minecraft videos on Youtube.

Basically, between this, the Yogscast thing, the goings on at the Deadmaus party, and the fact that the convention appears to have been poorly organised in general, Minecon probably wont be remembered as a roaring success.

Re: Minecraft

Yeah, makes me wonder if Notch is regretting the Con and if he won't decided to have another one in the future.

And I'm not sure who that girl is or what her involvement is, but it seems to me it would be far more likely that she didn't get the job based on videos, but rather made videos due to her interest in Minecraft that just happened to be a consequence in her getting picked to organize it. We don't really know her background or if she's had any skill in organizing something like this before, do we? Sounds like many people are being a bit harsh with her.

I don't know. No one seems to be complaining in their vlogs and such. I feel it is more "they talked crap about Yogscast, therefore Minecon sucked!"

Re: Minecraft

I figured it was a one-time event though just to celebrate the big 1.0 release.

I think if there are plans to make it an annual event though, Mojang needs to hand the running over to some company or group that has a few years experience running cons.

Re: Minecraft

Yeah, so in other words, if it was only a one-time thing, they likely didn't know who to go to organize it and figured it wouldn't make much difference. I'm likely to think there'll be another one to celebrate 2.0 and then maybe they'll spend money on a good organizer. Though it comes to be said that it really does matter about experience, but it's experience that can't be gathered any other way than running cons. There's a yearly convention I go to, and it's run and organized by the club itself, with no outside organization running things. They've been doing that since the 1920's. The only thing they do hire is food concession and security. So, in a way, since the club has been doing this for so long, they've become their own organizers, It probably helps that this is an outdoor convention and that the club owns the land and knows what exactly what to do with it every year.

Re: Minecraft

Well, I did an MCMap render of the world because I was curious to see what the Titanic looked like in it. Kind of hard to appreciate the sense of scale when you're actually working on it and not seeing the world around it. But man, it sure is mindbogglingly huge.

Here it is in respect to the town as a point of comparison:

Just making it a link instead of embedding it because it's a large file.
