Holdy, you definitely can't go wrong with either Sony (the TV or the BD player).

I'm in the process of loading a boatload of opticals onto the NAS -soon I won't even need the shelve-space my DVDs and whatnot take up!
Now THAT's a cool idea! Cutting out the middleman and keeping everything digitally.

Thanks. I've almost convinced myself to go for it.

One question that you all may be able to answer please.

I currently have a Sony Surround Sound system where all the various speaker/subwoofer wires connect to the back of the Sony DVD player I currently use that came as part of the home theatre system when I got it and acts as the receiver for all those inputs. There isn't another receiver/box they link to first.

Are these things universally compatible, in the sense that I can just connect the speaker wires to the back of the BD player I linked to? Or would they still need to be connected to the DVD player and the BD player would be additional to that?

The only experience I have with that kind of sound is connecting a pair of six-speaker-headphones to my computer so I wouldn't be much help here... What did your salesperson say?

Didn't think to ask at the time; which is why I'm doing so now.

I'll probably go back tomorrow and ask, much as I hate venturing into a shopping centre at the weekend.

Riiight, it's almost like venturing into a bank during lunch-hour --only bigger and badder.

A second Phenom II x4 925 processor upgrade for my computer. I ordered one last week, but I had somehow bent a couple of pins installing it and when I tried to straighten them out I ended up breaking one off. /facepalm

I think I know how I bent the pins on the first one and will not repeat the mistake again. I hope.

So with those still working, I feel it's indulgent to buy new gear. Damn my frugal nature.
I don't have that problem, "frugal" is not a word that describes my nature.

Last year I was looking at getting a Vaio, I ended up getting a MacBook Pro and I have been loving it to death. I would recommend giving the Mac another look, especially since the line is going to be refreshed in the next few months.

Absolutely! There are certainly significant benefits to leading a more flexible work lifestyle.

I just downloaded a PDF of the BD player's manual instead, which let me find the answer immediately.

I'd still have to use my current DVD/receiver combo unit (connected to the BD player) in order to use the home theatre system I already have. But it looks to be a dead simple connection.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not over-enamoured with Apple's aesthetic. They're similar in some respects, but Vaio look more mechanical/technological whereas Apples look more natural/organic. I prefer the Sony look. More fundamentally, I don't want a Mac.

In any event, after thinking and researching some more, my miserly nature is now kicking in. I love the idea of spending £1.1k on a shiny new 3D TV & BD player, and a further £1.3+k on a laptop, but while my current gear is still functioning, I'm going to hold off. No point spending money if I don't really need to, and by the time I will need to, it'll be cheaper, and I'll have made money in the interim on the £2.5k I won't spend tomorrow. Well, the TV will be cheaper, anyway; computers never get cheaper!

I will be partly hoping for a catastrophic breakdown of both the TV and laptop soon though, to give me an excuse to upgrade without feeling like I'm wasting money.

A new watch...
The wristband of my previous watch broke the watch casing...
Now i also had the standard wristband replaced by one of those stretchy metal ones...

Actually the computer is bound to become cheaper too: the kind of devices you're talking about (home entertainment electronics) have a tendency to become all but obsolete within half a year -- During post-summer sales you should be able to get a really good deal

After serving me well for six years, my router died earlier today. So I had to get a new one. I got a Linksys WRT54GL (my old one was the WRT54G).

Bioshock 2. I got carded at Gamestop when I bought it, which is a first. I have bought M rated games from them before (some quite recently), but they didn't ask for ID with them.

Oh well. Still a fun game.

I tend to keep things until they break, so 6-month or so out-of-date tech is no problem to me, esp. so for the TV. So if the current TV tech is good enough for me now, it will be fine in the sales too.

Thanks for all the advice, btw. Not having looked into this market at all recently, it's been useful to bounce around ideas.

Trip #1 to Home Depot this morning: some lumber for a small home improvement project.

Trip # 2 to Home Depot this morning: a cordless drill, because when I went to start said project, I discovered my old one had died (I guess 18 years is a respectable lifespan for a power tool)

Trip # 3 to Home Depot this morning: a hand saw, because when I returned to said project, I discovered that one of the kitchen contractors last month must've accidentally taken my saw, which I'd let him use.
