Badass Songs: Yea or Nay?

Doesn't have to be the greatest song of all time. Just something that blows your hair back, as the kids are fond of saying.

Bruce Springsteen: Atlantic City (Live in New York: 2001 version).

Re: Badass Songs: Yea or Nay?

I'm not sure what you mean by the definition of badass, but songs that got me hype and some even ready to rumble:

(Nothing works quite the same as gangsta rap; though let me add that I find a lot of the language and imagery, especially pertaining to African Americans in gangsta rap objectionable, I still enjoyed these hardcore songs)

Never Scared-Bonecrusher
Ain't No Play in GA-Pastor Troy
Vice Versa-Pastor Troy
What Up Gangsta-50 Cent
Hit 'Em Up-Tupac
Tradin War Stories-Tupac
Hail Mary-Tupac
Bury Me a G-Tupac
Notorious Thugs-Notorious BIG feat. Bone, Thugs, N Harmony
Down Bottom-Ruff Ryders
What's My Name?-DMX
M.C. Hammer-Rick Ross
Quiet Storm-Mobb Deep feat. Lil' Kim
Wild Out-The Lox
Deep Cover-Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg
Bout It Bout It-Master P
Tear the Club Up-Triple Six Mafia
No Vaseline-Ice Cube
Gangsta, Gangsta-NWA
Straight Outta Compton-NWA
Boyz in the Hood-Eazy E
Bawitdaba-Kid Rock
I'm Bad-LL Cool J
King of Rock-Run DMC
Playaz Circle-Duffle Bag Boy
Thuggish Ruggish Bone-Bone, Thugs, N Harmony

Others:
Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N' Roses
Blaze of Glory-Bon Jovi

And, see, other than GnR this list leaves me cold. No offense.
We all have different tastes. So what is kick-ass?

How about Listzomania by Phoenix?
Dreamweaver by Gary Wright
Rock n Roll by Led Zepplin
Born To Be Wild by Deep Purple
Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes by CSN

Listzomania and Good Vibrations, to be, are examples of great songs but not badass songs. For me, it has more to do with attitude than quality. IMO, that limits the genre to some degree. But it's definitely a thing where taste varies to quite a degree.

Yay to Good Vibrations!

It's overplayed in recent years, but Rush's Tom Sawyer.. It was my introduction to the band and that opening synth line ALWAYS got the hair on my neck standing.

Same thing for ELP's Lucky Man.. Maybe not badass, but always gave me a reaction.

Re: Badass Songs: Yea or Nay?

I'm not really a rock fan at all, I like some old school rock but it doesn't really 'get me going' as they say, I think...

So for a change of perspective these are some songs that DO get me going (All songs need to be played loudly with plenty of bass):

HuH - 4Minute

Superstar - 4Minute

FIRE - 2NE1

Pretty Boy - 2NE1

NU ABO - f(x)

Hurricane Venus - BoA

Dangerous - BoA

talkin' 2 myself - Ayumi Hamasaki

Ningyo Hime - Koda Kumi (PV)

I'm gonna stop there but I know I'll think of more as soon as I hit reply

In that case-

Jim Dandy by Black Oak Arkansas

And I stay with Born To Be Wild, adding School's Out by Alice Cooper

What a badass song is or isn't is highly subjective since everyone has different tastes. In my opinion, it has a lot to do not with how popular a song is, but by the musicianship, and then I guess by how it makes someone feel.

^^^Exactly!

And to my list I add The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band. Why? 'Cuz a good ol' boy from Georgia pwned the Devil at his own game! That's why!

Re: Badass Songs: Yea or Nay?

It just has to be your definition of badass in terms of a song being badass because it's everything you look for in a great song.

I realize I kind of tried to go the objective route on this one. Sorry.

Bad to The Bone is awesome live. I was actually able to see those guys in concert a couple years back.

That too, which is why I said it was very subjective. I also feel it has to make its mark in the music industry and mean something to it. Something you can also look at and say, "Oh yeah, those guys are undeniably talented." Though there are also very talented people that never get their due because the music industry is too focused on the latest thing. In the end though it's a very personal thing. What may be badass to someone may not be to someone else.
