Top 5 Stallone Films (for you)

In honor of his new film, the Expendables, please list your five favorite films. Give reasons if you want.

1. Rocky, the classic film, for all the reasons any critic could give. I love the simplicity of the story. I liked how he won even as he lost the fight, just by going the distance. I liked the respect he earned from Apollo, the announcers, and the crowd. I liked the fact that, in the end, all he cared about was his girlfriend. Of course mickey was just fantastic as a trainer.

2. First Blood. Not just a favorite action film of mine, but a favorite film. It set a precedent that on-stop action can carry a film, and it worked here because it was anchored in a character we could relate to, one that was tough yet sensitive as well, in a world that had no place for him.

3. Oscar It's only because the above-mentioned films are classics that this one doesn't get placed higher, because I love the film. It's a comedy in which the story is what is funny, and the "gags" all fit around the story itself. i love how everyone in this story doesn't really know what everyone else is really up to, and when all of the factors collide - well that's why it is funny. I can't think of a comedy today that can be full of the dumbest gags but have them work because of a funny-as-hell story. I recently found footage of John landis director) who says that he depends on the audience to put together the humor on this one, and he doesn't talk down to them. Give this film a chance, wait till Theresa shows up, and you'll be glad!

4. Demolition Man, cool sci fi mixed with comedy and action. It's a cool movie, and it's not dumbed down.

5. Expendables Bad dialogue, editing, writing has never made a better film. Thank you Stallone, for allowing me to revisit a time where bad guys were "mis-understood."

Rocky Balboa and Cliffhanger are the only Stallone films I've seen; both exceeded my expectations.

Re: Top 5 Stallone Films (for you)

Glad to see some people have already listed Rocky IV - a very under-rated movie IMO, especially by professional critics.

My top five....

1.) Rocky - As stated already, it was great how he won by losing. Perfectly written, directed, and acted.

2.) Rambo: First Blood, Part II - I'll probably get some heat for this, but this is my favorite Rambo movie. Stallone and George P. Cosmatos really did a good job here. Simply story, great action. First Blood was also good, but I felt it was kind of slow at times. Rambo III had it's moments, but not many.

3.) Oscar - Yes, Sly can do comedy, and do it very well. In fact, in a movie with numerous very funny performances, Stallone comes off as the funniest of them all.

4.) Cliffhanger - Solid story, solid action, good villian, good drama. What more can you ask from a Stallone action movie. And I'll never forget my favorite lines from the movie - "No bullets, bitch!" and "WRONG ANSWER MOTHERFUCKER!"

5.) Rocky IV - Great movie. I liked how Rocky and Apollo went from enemies to friends, so much so that Rocky cried at Apollo's funeral. Dolph Lundgren delivers what I feel is his best performance ever. And the music! Oh the music! How can you not love all the songs this movie featured? - "Burning Heart," "Eye of the Tiger," "Living in America," and "No Easy Way Out"

Haven't seen, but want to....
1.) Tango & Cash
2.) Cop Land
3.) Rocky Balboa
4.) Rambo
5.) The Expendables

I'm not that much of a Stallone fan, but...

Rocky - the ultimate underdog, perfectly paced with ideal dramatic beats.
First Blood - surprisingly dramatic and thoughtful, (with, IIRC, only one kill by Rambo, and that's as much an accident as anything else)
Demolition Man - great action-comedy fun (I'd pretty much tie this with Judge Dredd, actually)
CopLand - a nice change of pace
Get Carter - I'm going to take a lot of stick for this, but I like it way better than the original.

Tango and Cash, guys? Really? I will say he's made worse movies.

Assassins was one of them, with Donner's blatant political statements plastered (literally) and costarring someone who can out-terrible Stallone in the acting field, Antonio Banderas.

The Rocky movies always seem repetative and kinda, well, gay...but I never saw the first one. (Hey, there's people who've never seen Star Wars!)

Get Carter remake was overly hated. But I never saw the original.

Haven't seen Night Hawks in ages, either.

1. Cobra (biker serial killer cult is freakin' awesomely bad)
2. Judge Dredd
3. Copland (I'm likely remembering it as better than it was.)
4. Demolition Man
5. Rambo: First Blood Part II (Gloriously violent. The poster movie for right wing obnoxiousness in the mid-80's...made ironic that Stallone never served in the military, let alone 'Nam. First Blood is probably better, but I haven't seen it in a long time)

That film certainly wins the award for most ludicrously massive multiple explosion to result from a single missile strike.

Re: Top 5 Stallone Films (for you)

IMHO, First Blood was the only even remotely realistic film in the entire Rambo franchise. Subsequent films just turned into a jingoistic killfest, and I can't believe Stallone would have gone along with that. First Blood, OTOH, was about the mistreatment of veterans (spitting on them and calling them 'baby killers' and all that) and how they can be pushed to the breaking point by that abuse.

1. First Blood Great, and believable action film, and yes in the 80's I did own a hollow handled survival knife brought at the seaside!
2. Rocky, deserved Oscar winner. Would have been so easy to have him beat Creed.
3. Rocky Balboa (great film almost ruined by having to have a fight at the end)
4. Demolition Man. Brilliant sci-fi actioner and probably Sandra Bullock's best film too!
5. Judge Dredd (I'm hoping Expendables might knock this off!)

Honourable mentions to Rambo 4 and the first half of Tango and Cash (the prison bits) seriously was this film directed by two different people?

Cop Land,
Rocky Balboa,
and, uh well, let's throw in guilty pleasure Demolition Man as the fifth one.
