Phase II (1978) Stage 9 Photos?

Ever since reading about the striking of the VOY sets on Paramount Stage 9 in 2001 where, like layers of an onion, workers peeled back parts of the sets to find the deteriorating structure built in 1977 and 1978 for the aborted Phase II television series, I've been interested in the "archeology" of this stage during this time. I've read that many of the PII sets were essentially built and painted (although the bridge still seemed pretty rough) prior to being redressed for TMP. I remember reading that the different rooms were even painted with a color-coding scheme, and that the movie/TNG angled corridors were just built on top of their finished PII counterparts. Several photos of engineering and the bridge have surfaced over the years (many from the excellent Lost Series book) as well brief pieces of test footage shot in engineering (on the TMP: DE DVD), but I've seen no documentation of the corridors, sickbay, transporter room, or living quarters. There has to be much more out there though.

After recently finding this nice shot of the incomplete PII bridge I started hunting for more stuff but I'm coming up empty. Does anyone have any new PII documents they can share or link to? I'd even love to see a PII-era Stage 9 map just to see what the creators had planned for the sets; the closest I've found is the TMP layout here.

Watching the films, TNG, and VOY I never really paid attention to the set layout but for some reason the way these sets were repurposed over 20+ years fascinates me. Makes me wish I had an opportunity to visit them before they were destroyed to make room for ENT's "cave set".

Thanks!

You should check out the book Star Trek Phase II: The Lost Series by Judith and Garfield Reeves Stevens.

You mean the one he commented on in the OP? Yea, I am guessing he's seen it.

I probably should have mentioned the full title in my original post; yeah, I've pretty much worn that book out. When they wrote that book the Reeves-Stevens must have had a ton of material that wouldn't fit in the book. Maybe the Okudas have some unseen stuff they can publish. I think it was Mike Okuda's article (now MIA) on the old startrek.com that talked about the demolition of the sets in 2001.

Another fun thing to check out if you haven't already: the Phase II Enterprise Flight Manual here. I am amazed at the level of verisimilitude designed into the Phase II sets -- particularly the consoles with their practical buttons. Rather than random flashing greeblies, every control had a specific, well-thought out function that writers and directors for the upcoming series could utilize. This all carried over virtually intact to TMP, where it was almost never used on screen (but was seen several times in detail in TWOK). Even by 1987 standards the whole concept was pretty dated (the fluid, customizable touch screen interfaces seen from TNG on are of course much more practical) but it's still fun to see where they were planning on going with the show.

Have you seen this yet?

http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/

^ These guys actually continued the story and made their own episodes.... and you'd be surprised at some of the guest stars they got for their episodes.

They got Walter Koenig, George Takei, Grace Lee Whitney, Denise Crosby, Majel Roddenberry (for the computer voice) and a bunch more to pop into their show.

I can't say I watched any of their episodes other then their trailer for the show..... the actors they got to play Kirk, Bones and Spock sure don't look like the originals, but they paid close attention on trying to use the same stage setups, technology and to film their episodes in the same quality and effects as TOS.

From what I can tell on the site, you can either watch the episodes straight off their web site, or download to your hard drive.

Enjoy.

It sometimes amazes me with people's inability to read the original post.

That's a neat picture of the Phase II bridge, Joe_Atari. The colour scheme is very STIV/STXI. It's a shame it's not from a little further back - I'd love to know if they ever built that hideous plush sofa captain's chair from the concept art in the Phase II book!

No mention of the book in the OP. Sometimes it amazes me that people will try to pick a fight over something so trivial.

Oh and save your for someone who cares.

And it sometimes amazes me the level of unwarranted Jackassery some people give off in here.

I read the original post thank you very much, yer almighty holiness of all things forum.... since it related and he/she seemed interested in Phase II, I provided him/her with some additional information that some people actually moved forward with the Phase II concept.

Got a problem with that?

Apparently you do.... get over yourself princess.

At least Number6 and I contributed "Something".... what have you done in here besides shat on others?

Re: Phase II (1978) Stage 9 Photos?

Anywho, in relation to artwork and additional information on Phase II, I have a book "The Art of Star Trek" which shows a number of concept ideas of the new Enterprise. I don't have it with me to scan and supply any information, but he's one concept I found online:

Here's another shot I found online for the Bridge:

and another version of the Enterprise:

The following site has a list of some good concept artwork and such:

I hadn't seen that docking picture before, but I remember that bridge pic from a magazine years ago..

Yeah I believe it was a view from inside the big asteroid from this shot:

Here's another shot I stumbled upon just now of the concept bridge for Phase II:

Very much looks like the Motion Picture Bridge with TNG uniforms, lol.

Also, I found this site describing the modeling of the Klingon D-7:

Re: Phase II (1978) Stage 9 Photos?

Isn't the Enterprise in the docking pic a pre-Phase II design for that proposed Planet of the Titans TV movie?
(the model of that ship can be seen in the junkyard in TNG "Unification", just in case anyone cares)

You mean this one:

^ Not sure exactly, since I never heard of the Planet of the Titans TV Movie, but in my Art of Star Trek book, they show a number of sketches and angles of this ship and it was one of the first early concepts of the next Enterprise, which they later settled on the 1701-A design..... but I'd suspect that this concept was what set them in the direction for the 1701-D Galaxy Class. Can't say I ever noticed it in the Junkyard.

Here's a couple of other shots of this concept:

Yes. One of the most misquoted items in all of post-TOS Trek is that those Ralph McQuarrie study models and artwork were made for the Phase II television series. They were not. As KingDaniel correctly pointed out, they were created for Planet of the Titans.

Now, on the subject of the actual Phase II series...I can't believe that female extra on the bridge has a skirt so short that the entire bottom half of her buttcheeks stick out. Makes me wish Phase II were produced instead of TMP

Nope, the idea for the design of the 1701-D Galaxy class came from this painting:

Can't say I ever noticed it in the Junkyard.
