I had a thumb nail smashed years ago, and it looked just like this one. When the damage covers the complete nail like that, the whole thing will often lift off and the nail will have to grow back.
The same thing happened to me when I smashed my finger in a door when I was 10 years old. It was icky.

The least they could have done for DeSalle is to give him a Band-aid like with Dr. McCoy:

I always thought Kirk looked a little "different" in the "Where No Man" pilot --beyond just the earlier version of the uniform. But I could never put my finger on it.

Then one day I finally realized: That's the only episode where he has "regular" sideburns, rather than pointy, "Star Trek" sideburns!

Now I can sleep at night...

Well, that's not exactly correct:

Anyone ever notice the lace-up boots Kirk wore in Arena?

They were more durable than the ones they wore on the soundstages.

Apparently the Metrons equipped Kirk with rugged boots for climbing all over those rock formations, but for some reason they couldn't give him a tear-proof uniform.

I don't recall ever noticing them back when the show was on the air, but they were pretty easy to spot in screencaps. They look like the same kind of boots that boxers used to wear in the ring at that time and earlier (wrestlers, too.) I think you might be able to see him wearing the same boots in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" in the scene with Kirk fighting the Air Force security officers in the film archive room; can't check that right now, however, since TrekCore got hacked the other day and their screencap libraries are still locked down.

Kirk's feet are, naturally enough, down below the bottom of the frame most of the time, and when they are in frame, they are moving pretty quickly. So it's hard to find a good, clear shot. But, indeed, you can make out the laces of his stunt/wrestler's boots in the "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" fight scene:
