Advice on making uniforms :)

Hey im planning to make myself a miror universe uniform and also an early DS9/most of voy type uniform but with a skirt instead of trousers. I have never done a trek cosplay before and was wondering if anyone had any good advice on what would be the best type of material to use or if there are any dress patterns i could use, or other helpful stuff that hasnt occurred to me.

Also i would love to hear about other peoples experiences making uniforms

Maybe try asking in the Fan Productions forum, since people there probably have experience at it.
