One final word. That shot of Amy in amongst the sunflowers was just fantastic.
Hopefully you watched it in HD?
Unfortunately not...

Final episode of Blackadder Goes Forth. Underpants on head. Pencils up nose. Trying to get invalided out of the war. Message sent: "Captain Blackadder gone totally tonto. Bring straightjacket for immediate return to Blighty".

Wibble.

^^ It is a character piece though more than a plot-driven one, I could see that not appealing (or working) for everyone as it relies on one getting invested in the characters.
Exactly. This episode's appeal is more based on whether a given individual can enjoy a story that's character-oriented rather than plot-oriented, not on gender or original series fanhood.
I had not problem with the Van Gogh stuff, just dont ask me to enjoy the dull as dishwasher water plot that was the invisible Primeval reject.
The fight or the design of the monster wasn't the point of that bit of the story; it didn't matter what the monster was or even really what it did in the town, that was just the sci-fi wrapping to sell the Doctor being there in the first place. It was literalising what is said about the eccentric, 'mad' genius - they can see things in the world that others cannot. And tellingly, Van Gogh could see it but the Doctor, our 'mad genius', was as oblivious as Amy - a fact he acknowledged himself in the starry night scene. The story was about seeing things beyond the mundane or bland, not about fighting another kewl monster about to devour the Earth.

I loved this episode. In the scene at the museum near the end, though, I seem to have had a bout of spontaneous eye irritation.

The only thing that would have been better than seeing Amy's name on the sunflowers would have been to see one additional, NEW painting by van Gogh -- of an unidentified red-headed woman.

Sigh.

This was a spectacular episode.

Excuse me. I have to go get a tissue. I'm watching it again, and that eye problem is re-occurring.

That makes sense... Now I want to buy Blackadder on DVD.

Urbandictionary tells me that tonto means dumb or stupid. And yes Bob, you should.

Also do a google search on "gone tonto." Very enlightening.

Speaking of translating, can someone tell me what Amy said when they're about to leave and the Doctor says "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" and she says "I was thinking I may need some ???? or something before we leave." What was it she said she needed?

That surprised me too, considering how Vincent seemed to paint damn near everything.

But you just know that 'Who was Amy?' is now one of the great mysteries of the art world. Hotly debated, with many books written on the subject.

"I'm thinking I may need some food or something..."

And speaking of missed lines. I missed part of what Vincent said when Amy asked him about liking sunflowers.

"Always somewhere between living and dying...something...something...to the sun. A little disgusting."
