IDW comics and Pocket Books

Here's a thought:

I'm not sure if this is a separate deal from Pocket or not but would it ever be possible to take the IDW Trek comics and turn them into book form as a novel? And I'm only referring to comics that are a mini series.

What would be the point? The novels have plenty of stories of their own to tell.

Something to fall back on when there's a hole in the schedule like on TV.

^ Well, filling the "hole" with something like this would still require someone to actually, you know....write the book(s), have them edited, add them to the production schedule, and whatnot.

Besides, publishers don't commission books to keep on the shelf "just in case." When they pay out all the money in up front development costs, they're expecting to recoup their investment. There's enough hassle in an editor's normal day-to-day life just keeping up with the stuff that's scheduled to be published 3, 6, 12, 18 months out (and so on), without having to worry about building up some kind of "rainy day fund" of backup books.

I said it was a thought. I never said it was well thought out.

I would like more novel-IDW tie-ins. A New Frontier series involving the Typhon pact would be a nice link up and could be cross promoted if released about the same time

Now that might be the way to go in terms of having the comics and Trek Lit. work together. It would be sweet to see drawings of the Tzenkethi and Kinshaya.

I'm sure they exist somewhere.

Re: IDW comics and Pocket Books

I'd like to see some IDW graphic novel collections of the comics. Then I can keep some copies in the sleeves and have a sturdy book to read.

Where have you been?

IDW have been releasing graphic novels of all of their mini-series, plus numerous volumes of older ones.

http://homepage.mac.com/mmtz/stcomix/ and scroll down to IDW.

Clearly, not in the comic book store.

No, that wasn't sarcastic. We had to cancel our subscriptions at the comic book shop for a few months due to lack of funds. Thanks for the info!

A little off-topic, but I'd love to see original novels set in the Countdown (not Star Trek Online with it's 24/7 war orgy) 2387 timeframe, starring Captain Data, Ambassador Picard and friends. Like a flashforward with reguards to the "current" book timeframe.

Would the novels be allowed to use the set-up from the comic? Or would they have to pay extra royalties to IDW for using their spin on future-TNG?

^It's all owned by CBS. I think any licensee is pretty much free to use any concept that any other licensee has come up with.
