Door Labels. Help!

Hi, I am new. Hope I am posting this in the correct place.
I am building some CGI interior sets and I am stuck with the doors.

How are door labels numbered? I mean on the doors to people's quarters and the like. I know on the Enterprise D the deck number is on the left of the label on the left door then the room number must be on the right with the name of the room or the name of the personnel who occupy it.

On the Defiant and on the Enterprise E the deck number is missing and is replaced by the starfleet emblem. I saw that there is a four digit number on the right door sticker of Captains Picard's Quarters in Insurrection. Where is the number to tell you what deck you are on?

How do you number the doors? Are they numbered sequentially? 2110, 2112, 2113, etc. What number do I start from?

Hope you can help.

Re: Door Labels. Help!

I was looking through my Star Trek TNG Tech manual the other day and saw that they had a numbering system for the decks in the saucer section at least -- the decks were divided into 36 sections, each corresponding to 10 degrees starting at the fore of the deck and then working their way clockwise around. So, if your room was on deck E in the 1 o'clock position, you'd have something like E-01XX as your room assignment.

I wouldn't worry too much about adhering to it too much. I would just be consistent with what you have in front of you. Star Trek is a work of fiction by thousands of people (over the years) -- who's to say that the guy that made Picard's door sticker in Insurrection had ever read the Tech manual.

Hope that helps!

I'll attest to that. I had similar thoughts when I created "Star Trek: Encarta" many years ago, but decided to research the issue and came up with about the same thing you did from the TNG tech manual. The corridor set I designed for "Encarta IV: Dark Hope" indicates Captain Lynch's quarters are on deck six near section 13 A. An Emergency Bulkhead sealed parts of Deck 6 after several continued attacks from Sections 13 A - 19 B (13 alpha through 19 baker). See pictures.

Re: Door Labels. Help!

MalcolmB, it would also be neat to invent your own naming convention. That's one part of fan film/set building that is supposed to be the most fun! Especially minor details like this where you could in all theory sneak in your own little Easter eggs. Mike Okuda was infamous for that kind of fun on many of the modern trek's. For instance, the Encarta ship plaque on the bridge had many fun little things I added in, of course I can't remember any of them off the top of my head these days!

The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual has all the details behind door numbers aboard the Enterprise-D.

Also, every starship class in Starfleet's likely to have its own set of procedures and whatnot about this sort of detail. Whatever you set up for the starship class of your "hero ship", just make sure to remain consistent with that. And have fun in the process.
