Frank Lapidus

When talking with a friend about Lost, I mentioned that I'd be okay with them leaving some loose threads and not wrapping up everything. However, I would be severely disappointed if they don't delve into Frank's character. We don't know that much about him, except that he was supposed to be the pilot of Oceanic Flight 815, but overslept.

The pilot ended up dying due to the Smoke Monster, but was that always going to happen, or did it happen because it wasn't Lapidus flying?

Also, in a show that puts an emphasis on "good" characters, Frank always, to me, seems to have a strong moral compass and an understanding of what needs to happen. In "316" when he figured out it was the Oceanic 6 on-board (minus Aaron), he resigned himself to the fact that they weren't going to end up at their intended destination.

I wonder what his connection to the island is and I really feel that he is more important than we know.

I agree. Frank is a great character. I hope we do see more of him and learn more about him. The exchange with Ben certainly shows that the writers haven't forgotten about Frank. I just hope they have the time tell us more.

I wonder if he is the pilot of 815 in the Flashsideways? Maybe he woke up in time in that reality?

He is one character that I really don't care much about, and I wouldn't mind it if they never had more development on him. He could have a larger story, but I can't say I care much whether he does or not. Of that new little group that came I found Faraday and Miles to be much more intriguing. Frank is just sort of there to move the story along but I don't care much for his personality.

It was Parkman's voice on the PA in the plane, so I'd say Lepidus overslept either way.

I'd argue he's less intriguing because he hasn't been developed. Of the freighter group, Farady was the most interesting, arguably because the writers did the most with him. However, I will admit that I find him interesting because we know so little about him. What we've seen of him, how he's responded, all made him a great character to me.

Frank and Ilana are two characters that I simply don't understand how they became regulars. They have just mostly stood around until the last episode. I hope there is more in store for them.

I find it interesting how some later-introduced characters are rejected (Nikki and Paolo) and others are preferred (Ben, Eko, Juliet, Frank, Miles--love him, Daniel, and to an extent Charlotte).

I think Nikki and Paolo were an obvious foist while the rest were more characters that became interesting.

BTW, I love Frank's character--especially his "We're not going to Guam, are we?" bit. And I do want to learn more about him.

But there's so few episodes left.

Nikki and Paolo are such odd characters in the show, but I really don't get the hate for them. I had read about how awful Nikki and Paolo were before I ever saw Season 3, so I was expecting to find them horribly annoying. But they're only in the show for what, 2-3 episodes? And then they DIE! They were, at worst, an annoying distraction.

As for Frank, I was very surprised when he showed up on Flight 316. It makes me wonder if he had been touched by Jacob at some point that we didn't see. And if so, WHY didn't we see it? The writers obviously want us to think he's important in some way. Why does the Island want him?

Nikki and Paolo were characters who were supposedly there on the beach the whole time, and clearly weren't important to the story for two whole seasons, so when they were all of a sudden introduced no one bought it. The Tailies, Others, Freighties, Dharmies, and Ilana were all more relevant. We believe that they're actually important in some way.

I loved Frank and I wish they did more with him. Ilana is such a blank page I don't really care but I want to know how she became a Jacob groupie. Charlotte I never cared for. Faraday I loved and I'm still pissed they killed him. Miles is fun as a wise-cracking bystander only.

Re: Frank Lapidus

Nikki & Paolo grated against nerves, because,
1. They were annoying, & non-relevant
2. They were introduced as having been there all along, on a show, which fans were analyzing the impact of extras, like Joanna, who drowned in season one & Frogurt

It's been a series where we've had to consider nothing trivial, even though some things will be. Personally, I found it to be a weak gag, & a bit insulting to intelligent viewers, & had feared, throughout the prior seasons that characters who "Had been on the beach, all along" would start inexplicably turning up

What do you mean they were there all along? We just didn't notice? We're LOST fans. We notice everything. As for the other added groups, far more viable & relevant, with less insult. I'm quite interested in anything else about the freighter gang, being that there are so few left, & Widmore is back, but I suspect that too little time is left for much detail on them. In fact, I'm pretty sure we know everything there will be to know, about Miles

Ilana? Her gang is old school island alumni. We'll have to find out more about them

Re: Frank Lapidus

Just think how pissed people would have been if they'd followed the original plan. The first Nikki flashback was going to solely portray her as a secret agent. It wouldn't be until the SECOND Nikki/Paulo episode that we learned the first one was just a TV show she was acting in.

More hatred I don't get. I think that would have been a really fun wild goose chase, myself.

It would have been, but the problem is that those two characters were essentially pointless. Unless there was a great important arc planned for them, it would have made more sense to just leave them out of the story completely.

They don't bother me as characters, but I do have to wonder why they were created in the first place.

My first impulse would be to say "to fill time" since the writers at that point didn't know how long they would have to drag the story out.

But...

Apparently they did have big plans for Nikki & Paolo but when the fan outcry was so loud they dropped those plans and killed them off.

I still wonder what those plans would have been?
