"Relics" The Finale

I really do like the episode a lot, & having Scotty on the show was such a treat, but I have to wonder, with all the smart sci-fi ideas that appear in the episode, why the finale falls so flat

First we start with a Dyson's Sphere, which is such a terrific sci-fi premise, that it could be the basis for its own show. Then we continue with Scotty's brilliantly surprising, & unique usage of the matter/energy transporter premise, that is actually worthy of further development. Follow it all up, with a slick setup to the conflict, with the ship's hailing frequencies being a trigger for something unexpected. All great stuff

Then why, once they've spent all this time figuring out that the ENT-D is trapped inside, do they engage in such a ridiculously dangerous plan, when all the evidence points to the fact that if the door is open, then communication with the ENT-D is possible

Just open the door, contact them, explain that they need rendezvous at the hatch, and if the door closes before they arrive, just................ keep............ opening it

Granted, it's not as exciting as near escapes, emergency beam outs, and destroying a starship, but it is far less utterly stupid & needlessly risky

Just watched the show too, and thought something similar, but all you need is one line where Geordi says, "we'll probably only have one shot at this..." and some treknobabble reason why.

I thought you meant the finale finale were they throw Scotty off the ship in a poxy little shuttlecraft.

I love this episode, but agree the shuttlecraft ending is a little awkward. I think a simple beam out to a starbase would be more reasonable.

Besides, it left things so open, what happened to scotty out there? They should have just done something ridiculous later on, like Scotty comes back as a locutus type borg and tries to take over the ship

Yes, I have to admit the shuttlecraft ending bothered me. It's almost at though they were trying to get rid of him. How can that "be a better idea" than have a drink with him in 10-forward and telling stories of the old-days? I can't help but think Scotty must feel a little dejected and putting a brave face on as the shuttle door closes.

LOL Yeah, good point about the shuttle ending. Not all that great either really. "Here Mr. Greatest Engineer Ever. In return for your years of magnificent service aboard the Enterprise, take this shuttle. It has an engine too, sort of, so you should be right at home"

Kind of smacks of the Moriarty ending repackaged

Well, Scotty did admit he fudged the truth over repairs. Aside from Kirk was there ever anyone else who thought he was the best engineer out there?

I would think Styles Thought he was the best when Scotty got reassigned to the Excelsior, as captain of engineering for it's transwarp drive hooha, in TSFS. Styles, who expressed an interest in breaking some speed records held by the Enterprise, indicating that the 1701 was the top ship of the fleet. So, I'd imagine Scotty wouldn't hold his position without being the best himself, and maybe having a lot to do with the 1701's record breaking legacy

Apart from that however, I don't recall any specific references about his indisputable skill, beyond his shipmates. Although Spock Prime seems to consider him a remarkable talent, in the latest Trek movie, for having pioneered some such technique for warp speed transport

Oh yeah, & Scotty was integral in refitting the 1701 while serving under Decker. I suppose he's a decent work reference, as well

For me personally, I think the only reason they sent him off in a shuttlecraft is that someone forgot they had that really cool runabout mockup over on the DS9 set.

I thought this was going to be about how after Geordi says good-bye and the shuttle door closes, Scotty finally let one rip.

When you served with a feisty headstrong Captain, cold but always right first officer, sarcastic but insightful doctor and then you end up dumped upon a captain who would rather talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk his way out of something. A counsellor who is thick as pig shit when she wears the cleavage boiler suit- but gets a few brain cells when wearing Starfleet attire. A Klingon who has an appalling average of actually hitting the target with his phaser some dude with a gold sprayed hair band on his head- wouldn't you pine for the old days and take the first shuttle off there?

My with the ending is that they beamed Geordi and Scotty off the Jenolan and blew her up with a torpedo while the Jenolan's shields were still up.

It was an 80 year old wreck by then, I'd assume teleporting tech had advanced enough to get through its older shields.
