Re: Prometheus: Ridley Scott returns to Sci-Fi

Unless Ridley Scott goes on some drunken tirade in the next 6 months and insults a cop with racial slurs, I'm checking this one out.

The Ridley Scott name above the title alone sold it for me.

Without his involvement, I'd most likely would pass on it.

What effect would that have on the quality of the actual movie?

Reputation.

For example, Kevin Smith's Prometheus would not have inspired awe-inspring grandeur of mythic proportions at a 2001: A Space Odyssey-esque level.

So if Ridley Scott does a Gibson, Alien and Blade Runner will suddenly be bad films?

Don't you know anything? A bad sequel ruins everything that went before.

Same rules go for a remake. A bad remake ruins the original film.

Nope; but it's actually our respect for the man that make us flock to his films.

Apocalypto sank at the box-office as Gibson's stock took a dive...

Shame, because Apocalypto was actually pretty good.

I don't understand what you're saying here. Are you complaining that people like Damon Lindelof are making movies with the sole intention of making money? Because that's always how this has worked.

As for mediocrity having taken over Hollywood, I very much beg to differ. The "good" to "bad" ratio has likely always been about the same, but when we look at films from the past, we only ever rewatch those that are good. The bad and mediocre ones are filtered out, creating the illusion that the past was a golden age of cinema and that there are more bad movies now than ever.

As for Prometheus, I don't understand how you can reach the conclusion that it's mediocre based on a minute long teaser that stylistically resembles one of the trailers for Alien. You don't like Lindelof, I get it, but judging the film as bad when you don't have a shred of evidence to back that up is ignorance.

What I'm saying is a cabal does not have to deal with quality. Like chinese food resteraunts being in cahoots with each other over price and quality. I hope I'm wrong, but this seems like a freelance wash.

Yeah, and sometimes even bad writers can manage to write a good stories.

Look at Cameron's Smurfs in Space. Throwing enough money at a project can turn even a script on the level of a soap opera episode into a financial success.

I think Lindelof has his ups and downs like any writer. Cowboys & Aliens was awful, but I really enjoyed Lost for the most part, and Star Trek was great for what it set out to be.

I'm checking this movie out even if he does that.
