Saw Avery Brooks!

I did an update on my "going to see Avery Brooks" thread, but I'm not sure people will notice it, so hopefully I'm not violating any rules by posting pretty much the same thing again. The play was Sunday...

It was definitely exciting to see Brooks in person. He and his voice are both as gorgeous as expected. I was in the front row, and a lot of the time, he wasn't more than 10 feet from me. When he first came out on stage, I just about swooned. It was so tempting to say hello. LOL

The play itself was really good, all the way up until the last few minutes, which I hated. So I left kind of pissed at the playwright.

I've never understood why some people complain that Brooks overacts in DS9. For instance, I love the way he portrayed Benny Russell. But in the play, ironically, I thought he was over the top. Maybe it was just too much for the intimate setting. Or maybe the character needed to have an overly intense personality for the (miserable) ending to be believable. The more I think about it, the more I am inclined to think so.

Even w/ my ambivalence about some of it... I had a WONDERFUL time!

Re: Saw Avery Brooks!

I think Brooks is a good actor, and played Sisko just as well as Sir Patrick Stewart played Picard.

It was obviously due to Sir Patrick's portrayal as Picard that made him arguably the world's most famous actor (as well TNG's high ratings). If DS9's ratings were as high as TNG's, I see no reason why Brooks couldn't be a world star too.

Awesome! I would like to see him perform on stage someday.
