Tron franchise - possible TV show

Ain't It Cool is reporting a rumor that, if Tron Legacy doesn't flop at the box office this summer, the franchise will expand into television. A source calling themselves the Great Gonzo writes,
[A]pparently (Disney) the top brass is so psyched about Tron: Legacy that they're planning a TV show for 2011 & 2012 (probably for Disney XD). No news on whether it will be animated or live action. They're also already planning another Tron film for 2013.
We hate to admit it, but we'd watch the hell out've a well-made CGI Tron cartoon.

TrekBBS thread related but the title is not not quite representative of the film franchise discussion:

The very idea of a CGI television series gives a little hope to A Star trek CGI series.

Assuming this would be a CG cartoon (and how could it not) this sounds like a good fit with Clone Wars on Cartoon Network.

Of course, it will be on the Disney toon channel...

Re: Tron franchise - possible TV show

On the theatrical front, this could be the beginning of a new trilogy. And I'm not talking about including the original Tron. If all goes according to plan you could see this as the first in a trilogy of films that start with the word "Tron" and end somewhere else... Legacy is only the beginning. There are preliminary plans to milk this into a franchise of "Pirate" proportions. And the buzz from it so far is very good.
And that's not the only Tron project they're planning on having for us in the possible future. The plans have been put into motion for a computer animated television series that could conceivably be up by late 2011/early 2012. This would be something of a placeholder to keep the fans interest still peaked in between this first film and the next one. No word yet on where it will wind up being broadcast. It's not known if it'll be staged for the Mouse's fledgling boy channel Disney XD or the more mainstream ABC network, but as of now the concept has been greenlit for a pilot. We'll see how this project evolves down the development line as the film's release gets closer.

Interesting. Guess we'll have to see how the film turns out to know whether or not this is a good idea. But if they're already ordering TV episodes, then I'm guessing the studio is pretty confident in the film.

This movie could really spawn a huge new franchise. It's got the essential first element: a vast playground to set stories in, that follows rules that are familiar to our own reality in some ways, but in other ways is exciting and new, to keep things fresh and unexpected, and allow this new cosmos to develop a unique identity.

That's the same basic condition that allowed Star Trek and Star Wars to become ever-expanding pop culture phenomena. But now comes the hard part - will we care about the characters? Will the story rise above deadening cliche?

I'm just hoping the movie doesn't suck.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I still cringe whenever they start throwing the word 'franchise' around.

Another franchise about being stuck in a computer. Part 2 better not be "Tron: Reloaded"

Perhaps it's not so much "another franchise about being stuck in a computer" as it is finally exploiting the first one...

I actually really dig the voice cast. I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel and hoping too that it doesn't suck. The trailers so far have been all great. I read an early version of the script about a year ago and it was pretty good.

Yeah I know I'm getting way ahead of things here. If the movie doesn't suck, it could spawn a "natural" franchise, that deserves to exist, vs the usual type that is foisted upon us by corporate greed (not that any of this is devoid of corporate greed as the chief motive).
