John Krasinski as Captain America?

Uh...the fuck?

I had to imdb the guy just to be sure they were talking about the guy from The Office.

Aaaah, what do I know? I thought they were smoking crack to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Sure, let's see what Krasinsk can do.

Michael Cassidy - has the looks anyway.

It's early to be negative, but with Iron Man having been so brilliant, Thor shaping up well and even the under-rated Hulk boasting the likes of Ed Norton, Tim Roth and William Hurt, is Captain America shaping up to be Marvel's first major mis-step? I'm rooting for Patrick Flueger. Definitely has the looks, and from what little I saw of The 4400, he is a talented actor with real screen presence.

Jensen Ackles doesn't really strike me as Captain America. If I had to pick a comic character for him from Marvel it's probably Hawkeye. Although I think he'd make a pretty good Jay Garrick version of the Flash.

Captain America though? Not in a million years.

He was very good in Brothers staring opposite Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire. I just don't see him as Captain America, though. He'd need to bulk up considerably.

Chace Crawford is unknown to me - never heard of him!

But Krasinski is all over the place and would be a truly oddball choice for the role.

I imdb'ed Crawford, wow. If they ever need to give Chris Pine's Kirk a younger brother (or evil twin), there's you're guy. But fandom will probably stage a revolt if they cast someone from Gossip Girl in the role. Better he was a furriner than a CW girly-boy!

Wouldn't you have to watch the Office to know who John Krasinski is? And I actually had no idea who Chace Crawford was until I googled his name and saw he was on Gossip Girl so I'm sure there's a lot of people who have no idea who he is.

I've never watched The Office or Gossip Girl, yet I know Krasinski but not Crawford. For whatever reason, Krasinski gets into gossip mags, etc. I guess his relationship with some female character on the show is a big deal. I even know

Also Krasinski's girlfriend is that actress from The Devil Wears Prada - not Anne Hathaway, the other one - that seems to be good gossip rag fodder too.

It might just be that Krasinski has unique looks but Crawford looks very generic and could be mistaken for a dozen other actors (Pine, Ian Sommerhalder, etc.)

Krasinski is a rising movie star after staring in Away We Go and It's Complicated opposite Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, and Meryl Streep. He definitely isn't an "unknown". And The Office is a pretty popular sitcom. Chance Crawford might fit the mold better, but his appearance on Gossip Girl, another highly rated show, would negate that. I'm talking about Christopher Reeve, who was really an unknown before he was cast as Superman, or Brandon Routh, who only appeared in some soap operas prior to being cast as Superman.

What's up with the cast of Gossip Girl showing up in superhero movies as of late? Blake Lively was recently cast as the love interest in Green Lantern opposite Ryan Reynolds, and now Chance Crawford might be Captain America? Do studios enjoy pissing off fans by putting actors from Gossip Girl in nerdy comic-book movies?

CHUD's objection is that "Most of these guys look like male models, and not the rough and tumble kind but the sort who cry when their nails get broken."

It's probably hard to find a young actor in Hollywood who is the rough & tough type - that's not the type that is in demand for most roles. Plus, isn't Steve Rogers supposed to be a skinny wimp who grows into a badass? It's no fun if they start off with the badass.

A six foot tall guy in his 20s can hit the gym and bulk up enough to pass for Cap. I'm more concerned that they get someone with talent and screen presence so that the transition to a "rough and tumble" leader is plausible.

Maybe they're desperately trying to attract the young female audience since they figure they've got a lock on young males? They're trying to cross the Spider-Man/Batman phenomenon with the Twilight phenomenon and create a movie that will kick Avatar's butt at the box office.

He appeared opposite George Clooney in Leatherheads and has co-starred with the likes of Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep. He's not Tom Cruise or Matt Damon but he's far from unknown.
