Help out a Star Trek author

Star Trek author Keith DeCandido posted on facebook that he needs some financial help to avoid getting evicted from his home.

He has started a GoFundMe if you care to help him out.

You can also buy signed copy's of his books: http://kradical.livejournal.com/2996689.html

We did it! I hope he'll be able to brave the storm from here on but I'm heartened that substantive help came within hours of posting his refund request.

I wish he'd land another Trek gig. The Klingon Art of War was an amazing read.

Yes, the response was admirable and very good to see. I think there are a lot of us who would like him to pick up more Trek work.

Awesome that this worked out so fast. And I would love to see another Klingon Empire book.

No offense, but if i posted that on the boards, ya'll would delete it and call it spam. Whatever, worthy cause and what not, but come on. treat everyone the same.

They're saying that someone posting a link to a GoFundMe for them would've been deleted as spam and so this thread should've been treated the same way.

I understand where you're coming from but don't agree. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, particularly if said help involves money. I'm glad people were able to help KRAD and hope others will follow this example and aid those less fortunate when necessary.

I am not so sure that it would have happened here. In this case, KRAD is a notable and well regarded Trek writer who frequents these boards - and this is the TrekLit form. There was a call for help and it was was responded to by fans and peers alike. I think it's bloody marvellous.

You've made 7 posts in 3 months. Krad's been active here, psiphi, and elsewhere in the trek community for yonks and has written a lot of books that have given a lot of trek fans a lot of enjoyment.
It's basically the equivalent difference between someone you just met on the street asking you for money and someone you've known for a long time

There's also the difference between a 3rd party making the request and someone asking directly for assistance.

Here BrentMc posted about KRAD's need (whether that was at KRAD's request or on his own initiative I don't know) rather than a poster asking directly for someone to help them out, which is what DataSoong's comment seemed to imply.

Re: Help out a Star Trek author

Thanks for the signal boosting, BrentMc. We surpassed our goal, thanks to incredible generosity on the part of many folks, and I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am. Our long-term prognosis is good, but this was a short-term crisis that could've left us homeless. That, at least, has been staved off, for the nonce.

As for more Trek work, I'd love to, but it's not really up to me.

Exactly. There's a big difference between a bestselling author looking for help, and some random poster on the message boards.
