Casual Crew

Its probably been bought up before so sorry for that

I love watching all the ST eps from all the series but more so TOS and the TNG, the rest thereafter. I noticed that the crew of Kirk's Enterprise are more relaxed and casual on the bridge, how many times have we seen coffe cups on all the computer coms with each of the crew with a blue styrene cup next them, even Bones has one in his hand if there and at times food being eaten. You never see this on the other series (not that I've seen?). There must be other casual happenings but these are the two that I can think of.

Kirk strolling down the corridor naked from the waist up. Yeah, let's see Janeway pull that one off on Voyager.

First of all, every topic on here has come up at least 20 times in the five years I've been visiting, so no need to apologise for anything, welcome aboard

Re : TOS, Roddenberry instructed the actors to treat everything like it was just another day at the office : the communicators were to be flipped open casually like wallets; writers were to avoid lengthy explanations about how things worked (avoiding the odious technocrapple of 90's Trek); there were shipboard concerts, plays, Thanksgiving celebrations etc, all designed to give the impression of a crew on a long mission. Well, that was the case till the 2nd season budget cuts eliminated most of the crew anyway

Enterprise-D had plays, art classes, and concerts. Ens. Hottie in Q WHo? had her cup of hot chocolate in engineering, which she managed to spill on Capt. Picard.
So, at least that Trek spinoff had its casual side.

I'm not sure I equate the crew drinking coffee to casual. I would say tng was more casual with a kind of consensus style of command as compared to TOS where yes, Kirk asked his crew for input but was more of a hierarchical type of command.

Re: Casual Crew

Nah, the actors in TNG always looked and acted stiff whereas in TOS their body language, inflection, expressions, and uniforms (it's okay if they're wrinkled and you don't have to keep tugging them down every time you stand up) just seemed more like real life. I loved the way McCoy could lean against something or Kirk looked like he hadn't gotten enough sleep because of the pressures of commanding the ship and how they might occasionally bicker or snap at each other as a result; Spock was the stiffest of all of them but even he had a more relaxed and "alive" posture and demeanor than say Crusher or Riker ever did.
