Re: Star Trek: Restoration - Onyx

First of all : YAY, Restoration is back!

With that out of the way .... Well, damn. We all knew this had to happen eventually, but it doesn't make it any less unpleasant to see. Poor Kalara! (I thought it was interesting, though, that the very first place her mind went was Damien's safety. Why (other than the general insanity aboard Redemption and her strange dreams) is she so worried? Maybe I need to go refresh my memory?)

How will she prove her innocence? Will Astrid come to her rescue somehow, for reasons we don't yet understand? Will Damien believe in his wife's innocence?

Some great character stuff in the buildup to the confrontation. Loved Admiral Qwert, and Benjamani's reaction to him. Loved Kalara's boredom and disdain for Benjamani's approach. By letting us see the meeting through her eyes, you conveyed the feeling of negotiations that drag on and on and make little progress very well, without actually making us suffer through an overly detailed account of it. And Benjamani's line "my esteemed colleague" cracked me up. The more a political person lays that kind of flattery on, the more he or she despises the person he or she is saying it about. Well done.

I'm intrigued to see what happens next!

Re: Star Trek: Restoration - Onyx

Great chapter! I think Benjamani will rue the day she cut off Qwert during the negotiations. He strikes me as particularly, wily and resourceful. Benjamani's tactics will likely come back to bite her. Hopefully, the negotiations don't come apart in the process.

I have mixed feelings towards Kalara's behavior. My sympathy for her was rising (particularly due to her concern for her husband) but the attack against Sarine washed away much of that good will. Granted she was confused, angry and frustrated, but she is also a Starfleet officer. Going after Sarine was a stupid move on her part. She allowed herself to be thoroughly played.

That being said, I certainly hope someone can clear her name. In the mean-time, I'm looking forward to the conversation between Sarine and Benjamani. That should be pleasant.

She shouldn't have lost her cool. That looks damning. I mean, here's the report-

"So the recording showed Lt Kalara selling Federation secrets to the Klingons. I confronted her in my ready room to give her a chance to defend herself and instead she assaulted me and had to be subdued."

That's gonna sound great at her court-martial...

Holy crap! Kalara almost ended the brief yet notable Starfleet career of Bael Sarine. Good thing his trust XO was on her toes!

Youve recaptured the momentum of this terrific series, and the various machinations and personality conflicts are all rendered in brilliant 3-dimensional clarity.

As various plots and plans entangle, your characters become increasingly fascinating as well as desperate. Well done.

Re: Star Trek: Restoration - Onyx

Hi all,

Just wanted to give you an update on the status of the Onyx story.

First of all, I haven't abandoned it. I still plan on finishing this story eventually and am constantly thinking about the world and characters.

However... Due to RL stuff, I have had to make some choices in my writing time, and have decided to concentrate on my own worlds and characters. The novel I'm working on at the moment is taking up all my time, and so I haven't had a chance to progress on the Onyx storyline.

What that means is that there will not be any new updates for the forseeable future, and probably not until July at the earliest. What it also means is that I am determined to finish it and this story will be my main priority as soon as I have finished on Soulreaper, my current project.

So basically I guess I'm saying that I will finish it and I just hope that you will all still be interested when I eventually come back to it!

Thanks for all your comments and encouragements,

Joel
