Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate From Absolute Justice!

Here are the first pictures of Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate. I think Fate looks the best, Courtney's mask is too bulky for her face, and Carter looks off a bit but still really cool.

Stargirl looks like something you'd see at a convention with a fan having made it or something. It looks kind of cheesy, especially the Cosmic staff. It looks like something you'd buy at the dollar store. Now granted these are pictures and perhaps special effects will be used in the show to make things look better.

Of course I do...only that one specifies Hawkman only not the other two characters. We debated the nature of that particular picture, these are with the actors in costume.

Remains to be seen how these look in live action, so far I'm highly skeptical about faithful costumes translating successfully into this world.

Re: Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate From Absolute Justice!

I just find it hard to swallow that costumed heroes have been active in the Smallville universe, especially this recently in the past (it was the friggin' 80's -- not like WWII or something). The way the in-universe treated Green Arrow, they made it sound like he was a total freak the likes of which have never been seen before. And not a single person -- Chloe in particular -- has ever mentioned that Clark should probably come up with a similar costume so he can do what he does without being all hidey-hidey.

And with names like Hawkman, Stargirl and Dr. Strange, I really think the media of that universe would come up with a better name than "The Red-Blue Blur."

Re: Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate From Absolute Justice!

What makes you think the Justice Society has been active? I'm guessing that there is going to be a flashback sequence or something (Sandman might be from it) where Hawkman explains the history of the Justice Soceity in World War II. In the comics the JSA were shut down and disbanded during the 50's because of the McCarthism going on, a similar thing could have occured in Smallville. Since Geoff Johns is writing this I'm almost expecting this to be mentioned. Stargirl I'm guessing is recruited by Dr. Fate to uphold her predecessor's legacy (Starman). The Justice Society has been forgotten largely by the media...I'm guessing they've not remembered the age of heroes for some reason. I'm confident that Geoff will fit things together in the Smallville world like he did for the Legion as well.

Chloe's mentioned in the past that Clark should take another identity like Warrior Angel...and I think there have been lines from Clark that he's considered it.

Re: Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate From Absolute Justice!

Someone mentioned in another thread that the story is they were active 20 or 30 years ago, which puts them in the old timey period of the 1980's.

It doesn't matter if they've been active since then or if they were shut down. The media and every single character on the show have acted like superheroes have only ever existed in comic books. The idea of someone like Green Arrow running around in a costume is both shocking and ridiculed by the media. And despite there obviously having been heroes in the past, it's still pretty hard to swallow that the best name the media could come up for Clark is "The Red-Blue Blur."

It's just not believable in the setting. At all. If they had even so much as hinted at it before, I could swallow it. But at best we get references to Clark being "Guardian Angel," a fictional action hero. He's never been compared to another 'real life' superhero. Ever. Because, up until they decided to do this, there never were any. The closest we get is the Martian Manhunter, and he's always been cowering in the shadows himself.

Re: Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate From Absolute Justice!

I agree with you..that's the writing team fault I think...I was wondering how the Legion of Superheroes would be dealt with in a Smallville setting and Johns handled them brilliantly and made them work even with the inconsistencies of the series. Garth even makes a joke about it...did we come back to the right time?

Who is to say that the JSA is known to the public like rock stars??? They could be the thing of myth and folklore in the Smallville universe. Plus Chloe & Clark never seem to know anything until they research it or it smacks them in the face so...
I am cool with it for now, just can't wait to see it. Yeah Star Girl's mask is ugly...hope it looks better in the finished product.

Funny. When the costumes aren't faithful, people complain. And then when they are... People complain. Talk about no winning.

Wait till Superman arrives. Everyone will be jaded.

Re: Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate From Absolute Justice!

Using another "connecting the dots" theory of mine, it is very possible that the JSA was very active in the Smallville universe in the 80s.

How?

Like our Chloe has shown us as Watchtower and the Legion not knowing anything about her, the best way to keep your identity secret is for no one to even know you exist. And the JSA could have easily pulled that off, even after having a big throwdown in downtown Metropolis. Simply by having Dr. Fate cast some kind of spell of forgetfulness.

It could be that using such a spell was SOP for them after each public appearance. Or they could have operated publicly for years and something went bad which made them remove themselves from Earth's collective memory. But such a feat is very possible when you have Fate on your side.
