Good or bad Klingons in XII?

Orci and Kurtzman decided against the Klingons as badguys in XI for two stated reasons: they were over-used stock villains in Star Trek (Search for Spock, Final Frontier, Undiscovered Country, Generations, all had Klingon baddies, --with the last three happening consecutively too). And secondly, they had become heroes in the later series (Worf, for example).

It seems a foregone conclusion that they will play a role in the next movie. What I'm wondering is what role? Are they going to be heroes or villains or a shady mix of both? Either could play off the events of XI. As a consequence of 47 "War-Birds" being destroyed in single battle the Klingons could become even more war-like than before; or seek allies to help defend their weakened empire.

To state my position, I'm a fan of Undiscovered Country, and I like the idea of two antagonistic races/cultures becoming unlikely partners secretly and at great risk.

If they bring in the Klingon's I want them to be heroic yet still a little wild, if you cast them as just bad guys that would be a little too - two-dimensional, they should be a little grey, having qualities that viewers can admire and respect but still unnerve us at the same time with their wild nature underneath the skin. It depends on what they say and what they do of course but hopefully we get no patsies to make Kirk look like the only noble and good people in space.

Klingons should be bad - this shouldn't be the era of the fun, friendly Martok-type Klingon - but not unreasonably so. They should be depicted as having their own culture and motivations, which make sense for them. They are not undisciplined savages. They are smart, highly courageous, creative and unpredictable. Their society is functional and highly successful.

Shady villains with their own good reason (in their terms, not necessarily the Federation's) for doing what they do.

The Klingons were an important component of near Federation space during TOS. IMO leaving them out of another movie would be odd, unless the Enterprise is off on a long range exploratory mission in the other direction.

It really does not strike me as a foregone conclusion at all. Anyway, if they do show up, I would like it shown that they are dangerous and not to be trifled with, but not necessarily all evil.

Neither good or evil, just aliens with some self interests and disputes. It would be a sign of maturity in the new films if they shed this black and white mentality.

Re: Good or bad Klingons in XII?

Well, if they do use the Klingons, I just hope there is something Klingon about them. Nero could just as easily have been a Klingon, human or any other species and it would have required nothing more drastic than removing the word "Romulan" from the script.

Even the Narada's interior looked Klingon. Granted it was a refitted mining vessel and not a Romulan warbird.

Re: Good or bad Klingons in XII?

Klingons should be villains but the sort with their own internal logic that you can understand. Latter-day Klingons (TNG/DS9) were too much just jolly ole space pirates. Martok was a blast, but he's exactly not the kind of Klingons I'd like to see. They should be far more menacing and dangerous. They should never be the kind of people you'd think it was fun to have a drink with, and if you made the mistake of doing that, you would quickly regret it and start looking for the quickest way to the exit without getting a bat'leth in the back.

To come across as a believable society, they should also be extremely driven by their sense of honor - everyone has their place in the pecking order and to step outside of that place and make trouble is a huge taboo for Klingons, and very rare to see happen. That way you can have a pack of scary maniacs who still could be organized and disciplined enough to create a spacefaring society.

Bad, VERY, VERY BAD. terrorist attacks on the federation super weapon attacks on federation planets, Enterprise sabotaged by Klingon sympathizers.
You're thinking of Romulans or Cardassians. Klingons would never stoop to terrorism and sabotage - not honorable enough.

Re: Good or bad Klingons in XII?

^ I think Martok was the perfect example of the kind of Klingon that you (and we all) want. Martok was not the stupid pirate type. He was cunning, brutal (when he had to be), a fierce warrior, and yet cared very much for those under his command.

I keep thinking of what happened when JG Hertzler auditioned for the role. AFAIK, he basically just did one thing: He threw a chair against a wall. That got him the role right there.
