Baxter the Fox Full Body Sketch

Sorry if this isn't the right forum. I'm not even sure if a forum exists for artwork, poetry and the like that isn't Star Trek related.

Anyhoo, many of you have seen my previous efforts at drawing. I'm still new at it and haven't drawn for over a year. Before that, not since Kindergarten.
Well, last night I decided to go all head on and draw a full body sketch of Baxter.

Here it is (taken with a camera so forgive the slight skewing of the image):

If you've never seen me draw before, here are my previous attempts:

This was the first sketch I ever drew, as of June of 2008.
Before this date, I had never drawn since Kindergarten:

I made a second attempt a short time later:

And then a third attempt:

After that, a year passed until I finally tried again, this time just going all out.

So, what do you think? I figure if I start actually practicing, I could get pretty good at this.

Two points:

First, they do allow OT art posts in the Trek Art forum (confusion over which resulted in a QS&F thread), and

Second, who's Baxter again?

It's a good job, though, for someone who hasn't drawn in a long time, especially since childhood. If you're serious about this, I'd suggest investing in a figure or life drawing course to help get down the basics. IIRC, the last time this subject came up, one of us mentioned "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain," which I think you bought? Have you been working through their exercises?

Oh, okay. Well if a mod wants to move it there that's fine with me. I didn't know.

Baxter's my fox character I created. I don't know why I named him Baxter, but I liked it.

Thank you! Yes, I bought the book and no, I did not do those exercises.

In fact, I've been busy with so many things, the last time I put pencil to paper was about 8-9 months ago. I just had some time last night and doodled a full body sketch of Baxter.

Re: Baxter the Fox Full Body Sketch

^

Okay, seriously though.
I try to follow the drawing guidelines but I can't seem to do them right. When I work with a drawing tutorial (Baxter's full body sketch in this case is based on the stance made in Kirin's Drawfurry.com tutorial), I try to follow the guidelines and the prep but I go way off track, so I zoom down to the finished project and look at how the arms and legs are proportioned, the stance and then I just draw it from that.

In further answer to Gep Malakai's question, I did start reading the book "Drawing with the right side of your brain". I got 3 pages in, where I realized where the book was going and it clicked. I'm still reading it, though. Some of the exercises require materials I just don't have, and since we have no art supply stores anywhere around here anymore (the one I thought we had ended up being long gone), I have to wait on finding certain materials on the Internet.

Anyhoo, I think I did the legs okay, and while the stance is a little off it doesn't bother me either. It's the head. The style of drawing for the head does not really match the style for the rest of the body, I don't think, but maybe it does. I'm not sure. I wanted to make the head a little more angular and blocky. Noses are the worst for me. I cannot get a nose right. I can draw human noses, but I can't get an animal nose right whatsoever. Dogs and foxes are the worst, even though they're the ones I want to draw the most.

You tell me. It's okay here. It's okay there.

The picture is great. You're obviously a natural, and you just need practice (and/or lessons). Keep going. Start a DeviantArt page.

I'd like it to stay here, to be honest. It's already had some views and replies.
If I eventually start another one, I'll post it in Trek art.

Its pretty good! I suck at human anatomy, so when it comes to drawing furry type characters, while Id probably do ok with the head Id do terrible with the body. But I dont think your fox's head looks bad at all.

I'm not sure about the head. It kind of looks okay, but I don't like how it works with the body overall (which has a few issues of it's own). I wanted a more definitive profile for the face, but I don't think I succeeded.

Keep drawing him, in different poses and different situations. Cartoon characters have a tendency to find themselves. Pick any famous cartoon character, from Mickey Mouse to Bugs Bunny, and look up their first appearances; you would hardly recognize them.
