Who disregards the continuity after the Kirk era?

After the Undiscovered Country that's all folks my personal continuity can be over.

I was tempted once ,but the completist in me didn't let it happen.

My sig says it all.

And I get blasted for it often enough, too.

I've long held the view that over the years we've been seeing different alternate continuities. For me it goes something like this:

TOS-TAS-TMP

TWoK-TSFS-TVH-TFF-TUC and this continuity may be part of TNG-DS9-VOY-ENT

And finally there's ST09.

I will add that I think that something parallel to TWoK through TNG happened in the original TOS continuity only somewhat altered. In no way can I accept anything parallel with ENT in TOS' continuity. TOS' 21st and 22nd centuries were quite different.

Well personally I think that The Undiscovered Country is a good cut off point for the Kirk era.

Wrapped it up quite nicely.

Ahhhhhh personal canon.

In my mind, not only did TNG+ not happen, but most of TWOK-TUC didn't happen, or didn't happen the same way as what we saw on screen.

In fact, some of what we saw in TOS was wrong too, but mostly background stuff and organizational stuff.

AFAIK, people can believe whatever they want to believe. However, personal belief, personal "canon" if you will, has absolutely zero effect on what the "actual" canon of the show/movies are. People are still going to go out and buy the Blu-Rays of ST '09, the producers are still going to film the sequel, and millions of people are still going to see it, regardless of what some schmuck at the TrekBBS thinks about "personal canon." Someone telling me that they completely disregard all events after TOS is meaningless to me, because I don't feel the same way, and it's pointless to even have an argument with that person because there's no common basis with which to have a civilized, logical discussion (and anyway, I have Paramount to back me up). It's like arguing for or against the existence of God. But if that's what that person believes, fine.

Whatever Paramount says is canon is canon. What I like and dislike is my own affair, it's not the same thing for me as saying that 'it didn't happen'; because I don't assume I have that sort of authorial control over the franchise, even at a personal level. Spock's background, life and death and context are not things I can pick at a whim.

I can see the wisdom in trying to view them all as different continuities. The idea that TOS follows Enterprise doesn't gel with me. So, aside just being curmudgeonly, I can see where trying to separate them from one another makes sense.

"Disregarding" everything that followed Kirk's era as "non-cannon" strikes me as going overboard. I don't particularly care for 19th century American history but I don't just pretend it didn't happen. Like it or not stuff did in fact come after the Kirk era.
