So, what type of ship was the Kelvin, anyhow?

What was it's main function/purpose? Might help explain the size and so on.

It was Starfleet's flagship of the Badass Class™ Starship.

It was a starship. Its mission was doing what starships do.

The USS Kelvin was supposed to be a survey vessel.

You mean the same one that got pwn'ed by Nero's bunch?

If it was a survey ship, wonder what it was going to survey.

Re: So, what type of ship was the Kelvin, anyhow?

Obvious, really. She was the erstwhile Saladin class single nacelle destroyer Rahman, NCC-514. But since Starfleet in the 2230s had more destroyers than it really needed, and too few scouts, it bolted a dorsal pod on the Rahman to give her better sensors plus a full contingent of exploration and support shuttlecraft. To denote the new role as an observation vessel, Starfleet added the letter O in front of the registry number, and changed the name from the "famous generals series" to the "famous scientists series".

That would be the ideal ship type to explore the borderlands of Romulan territory: a badass warship converted for frontline exploration. Of course, by 2233, she was already a bit worn down, and had not received the cutting-edge refits many of her still-destroyer sisters enjoyed, such as the enlarged, more rounded dorsal and ventral superstructures and saucer lower rim, or the slightly more compact PB-31 warp engine dangling on a slightly elongated neck. And now she never would...

I wonder if the Kelvin had a dedication plaque?

Correction: you mean the same one that pwn'ed Nero's bunch by going on a suicide run to disable the Nerada and save the Kelvin's crew in the process?

It was only destroyed because Robau willed it to happen.

If it was a survey ship, wonder what it was going to survey.
Capt. Robau's awesomeness. It was a never-ending mission.

Re: So, what type of ship was the Kelvin, anyhow?

Considering the armaments, I'm wondering of Kelvin wasn't a battlecruiser.

It depends on what the blue-bolt turret things really are. If they're some type of pulse phaser weapons (I don't think so) then you have to think, that's ALOT of firepower for one little ship: twelve heavy phasers and eight smaller ones, possibly with a torpedo launcher somewhere.

OTOH, if they're an older type of missile turret firing some kind of small missile (obsolete but still useful weapons leftover from the Romulan Wars?) it would be equivalent to a picket vessel, a destroyer in the same vein as the Saladins if fandom, mainly designed to engage small threats like fighters and corvettes that might attack in massed formations.

The Kelvin's main function and purpose is to ferry Robau across the stars on his badass and highly classified missions.

Re: So, what type of ship was the Kelvin, anyhow?

It was originally a ship of a different class nomenclature, but when Robau took command he demanded it be changed to Mutha-Badass in order to more closely reflect its new commanding officer.
