Anyway, the girls who are voting have good taste. Spock & Spock are tied for the lead.

Now, basically, for me, what I find attractive, in the feminine sense, involves a combination of the various characteristics I've mentioned: Vulnerability, integrity (i.e., "inner strength"), innocence, idealism--and another characteristic I don't believe I've really touched on: enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm, here, means a "child-like" (for lack of a better term) eagerness in the viewing of life. Call it ambition, combined with innocence and idealism (the two "i"'s go hand-in-hand, a lot). It is a spirit that faces life with expectations that spring out of a desire to see the good in the world.
Innocence? God, no, not for me. I want a woman that is guilty as sin. I like a woman that with just one look in their eyes can tell me they've got such a dirty mind and willingness to execute it it would make the proverbial sailors blush. (Of course, she'd probably only half way up to my perverted mind, but that's whole other matter. )

As a pre-teen/early teenager, when I first watched TNG, I used to girlcrush on Deanna Troi, thinking that she was 'OMG, she is so beautiful'... but watching it as an adult, it's different - she is gorgeous, but her personality really takes away from any potential hotness, you know? She's still warm and likeable, but can anyone be sexy while uttering "I am sensing.. blah blah blah" and acting and speaking as such a stereotype of a caring motherly female? Not that I have anything against female characters being caring - but not in such a cliche way. Kira can be very caring at times, even though she is so tough.
Somewhat yeah, of course wondering what's behind the professional facade brings forth some appeal, but I did always like Crusher better. But then, I do have a fetish for red hair.

All right. It pains me to give this update...but for the sake of fair play....

Seven's in the lead, with 52.

Jadzia's in second, 51.

Ezri fell behind to third, 49.

T'Pol's still in fourth, 47--and catching up!

And...Kira's in fifth, with 40-even.

It's the original Greek definition.
Many modern words originally had different connotations or definitions, but when you use them, you have to expect that most people are going to take the modern meaning. I don't know many women, really any that I can think of personally, who would find being called "meek" a compliment, even if you told them the meaning was more flattering in the original Greek.

Well, the... pants are definitely nice to look at but I think what it's really about is his commanding presence and charisma. Why, or why didn't anyone give Marc Alaimo a major non-villainous role? Then people wouldn't have to feel guilty for over his character, to come up with AU versions of Dukat that they feel allowed to like.
Yeah. I know it shouldn't make a difference, per se, as he's a fictional character, but he's still a fictional character who was a mass murderer and sociopath. Finding him attractive feels dirty. Kind of like finding Frankenfurter attractive. I guess some of us like feeling dirty. They should've just dressed him as a Ferengi. Then his wily charms would be easier to resist.

Like you said, it's all about the attitude - and that's what makes the difference (at least for me) between people who are just good-looking, and those who are really sexy. There are many physically attractive people who leave me cold because they just don't have it, and they completely pale next to someone who has charisma and presence (which easily makes you overlook any physical imperfections they might have). I could never be attracted to someone who was passive and boring, whatever they looked like.
Dr. Bashir was that for me. Attractive man, not at all sexy. Kind of goofy and cute, more or less. He got better later in the series, but he never reached sexy.

Garak was the opposite. While he's not generally my type physically, the personality more than compensated. I found myself attracted in spite of myself, and I liked that a lot.

DevilEyes wrote: View Post
As for the women, I also find Uhura incredibly hot - she's my 2nd biggest girlcrush after Kira - not just because of her looks (and she is gorgeous) but because of her attitude. Even though the writing for her character was often lame (too many lines like "captain, I'm frightened", though there were occasionally cool lines like "sorry, neither" in 'The Naked Time'), Nichelle Nichols had this attitude and presence about her, that made her look stronger and more spirited than the other women on the Enterprise (Rand and Chapel always seemed so weak). That's what the new movie has picked up on, and Zoe Saldana is a good choice and comes pretty close to matching it.
She totally did have the attitude. I was glad they developed that more in the movies. Despite being older then, she was still incredibly hot. I'd take her over any of the TNG women any day of the week, even when they were younger and she was older, that is if she'd have me. Troi was never sexy to me, or Crusher, but then, none of the TNG men were either. All too bland and blah.

And you are right that it has nothing to do with the stature. There are many short men and women who are tough and exude confidence and attitude, while there are many tall or athletic women and men who are passive and lack confidence. I have a friend who is very small, just about 5' and thin, but she is totally badass. One look at her and you know she is a tough cookie - and I don't mean that she's aggressive or belligerent, just energetic and confident and with a lot of attitude, more than anyone I know. Come to think of it, Mirror Ezri looks a bit like her (they have similar haircuts) only taller and a lot more sociopathic.
Two of the most intense actors I've seen on screen, Tim Roth and Robert Carlyle, are both 5'7". Height definitely has no bearing on presence. Oddly, I found out Nana Visitor is taller than I realized, 5'8". I guess it's just because she's surrounded by some very tall actors on DS9, including Terry Farrell, that she looks short in comparison.

DevilEyes wrote: View Post
Vulnerability can also be incredibly attractive... but for me, only when it is combined with strength. In fact, there is nothing more attractive than a combination of strength and vulnerability. But I have to say that I am not that attracted to people who like to display their vulnerability for everyone to see... I am much more attracted to hidden vulnerability, to people who don't normally show it. Spock is a great example. When you can see a strong emotion in someone who normally hides their feelings, you are all the more affected by it.

Overall... I never really liked 'cute' and cutesy people. I like edgy and intense.
Spock is a good example of that. I think Garak is, too, and Seven, though my memory of Seven is a lot spottier. I just remember my overall impression of her was that she was a strong person who didn't quickly or easily show a soft side.

Any adult who reminds me of a child in pretty much any way isn't sexy. I don't want innocent, either. That doesn't mean a person has to be extremely crude or vulgar to be attractive, or Film Noir style jaded, or Hustler style perverted. Just be an adult, somebody I can see as an equal. The first sign of a "protect me" vibe, or a "think for me" vibe, or god forbid a "be my daddy" vibe, and I leave skidmarks on my way out the door.

And because it sums it all up so nicely, I'll include more words from our wise Professor Hill.

No wide-eyed, eager,
Wholesome innocent Sunday school teacher for me.
That kinda girl spins webs no spider ever--
Listen, boy--
A girl who trades on all that purity
Merely wants to trade my independence for her security.
The only affirmative she will file
Refers to marching down the aisle.
No golden, glorious, gleaming pristine goddess--
No sir!
For no Diana do I play faun.
I can tell you that right now.
I snarl, I hiss: How can ignorance be compared to bliss?
I spark, I fizz for the lady who knows what time it is.
I cheer, I rave for the virtue I'm too late to save
The sadder-but-wiser girl for me.
No bright-eyed, blushing, breathless baby-doll baby
Not for me.
That kinda child ties knots no sailor ever knew.
I prefer to take a chance on a more adult romance.
No dewy young miss
Who keeps resisting all the time she keeps insisting!
No wide-eyed, wholesome innocent female.
No sir.
Why, she's the fisherman, I'm the fish you see?--PLOP!
I flinch, I shy, when the lass with the delicate air goes by
I smile, I grin, when the gal with a touch of sin walks in.
I hope, and I pray, for a Hester to win just one more "A"
The sadder-but-wiser girl's the girl for me.
The sadder-but-wiser girl for me.

Yes, I was surprised at first to find out that she is that tall... It broke my illusion that we are of the same build and stature... oh well Come to think of it, having a mostly tall cast helped DS9, because the Ferengi could look really short by comparison. Of course, the Ferengi actors were on the shorter side, but apart from Aron Eisenberg, not really that diminutive as they appeared on the show. In a cast of average height, the contrast would not have worked that well.

I thought Robert Carlyle was taller... I don't know, I guess he may be one of those actors who don't have an appearance of a short guy (I've noticed that happen a lot with thin and long-limbed people).

Yep, a short tough guy has pretty much become an archetype - from James Cagney to Al Pacino to Joe Pesci to Tim Roth. Add to that many other tough guy actors who may not be that obviously short (in the sense that their shortness does not jump at you from the screen, and they can fool you what their height is) - Humphrey Bogart, Harvey Keitel, Mel Gibson, to name a few. Even Robert De Niro is not that tall as I always had the impression he was - it turns out he is just 177 cm.

One thing I remember Copycat by - a fairly forgettable 90s serial killer movie in other respects - is that Sigourney Weaver (who is 180 cm/5'11") was cast against type as a traumatized psychologist/profiler, playing against Holly Hunter (5'1" or 5'2") as the tough, no-nonsense cop (in a role that was apparently originally written as male).

I saw that movie, too, and yes, Holly Hunter pulled off that role flawlessly. I've loved her for years, though, even if she never can quite get rid of her twang. Jodie Foster is fairly diminutive, and she can also come across as tough as nails and somebody you don't want to tangle with.

I'm suprised that Neelix and Wesley got any votes--especially considering all the fan-hate.

OTOH, this is an anonymous poll, so....

I've been surprised at quite a few. I have to wonder if some weren't tongue in cheek, particularly with Neelix. I knew some people when I was younger who had a crush on Wil Wheaton, so that one doesn't surprise me quite as much, although the character was far less attractive than the actor playing him. But Neelix? Quark? Really?

Take a better look. Neelix is not in the poll - and I didn't forget about him, I didn't nominate him because I thought there's no point to it, since there's no way anyone could find him sexy.

Quark did get a couple of votes... but hey, he is not as bad as Neelix! He's smart, funny and has got a certain charm of his own...while Neelix is just stupid and annoying. Quark is probably considered attractive on Ferenginar.

(Another one missing from the list is Phlox - but nevermind, he's not the most attractive guy out there either, is he?)
