Re: Retro Review: Unification, Part Two

"The first time I saw "Unification," I was irritated enough with Spock that I didn't fully enjoy the rest of the story, but now that I know Spock will keep on returning for as long as whoever is running the Star Trek franchise can come up with some excuse to bring him back, I have less invested in what he's doing on Romulus at this particular moment and"

This is a blatantly unfair slam. It is also completely untrue. Nimoy declined to return for Star Trek: Generations (even turning down an offer to direct the picture) when the people running the franchise did not come up with a "good excuse to bring Spock back."

It wasn't until 2008 -- 17 years after he filmed Unification -- that Mr. Nimoy returned to the role, coming out of retirement, for a part that was worthy of his participation and respectful of the Spock character.

Also rationale used to bring Nimoy back for Star Trek 09 was much more than an "excuse" -- Spock Prime is central to the movie's plot and the story would not have worked without the character's presence.

To change the subject, you did point out some very valid issues with Unification and how Spock was written in that episode. I think that the episode suffered because the producers tied it into Star Trek VI in a kind of cross-promotional event -- which allowed Nimoy to work on TNG for a much reduced salary. The Star Trek VI elements (e.g. Spock saying that he did not inform the Federation about his clandestine trip to Romulus in 2369 due to the lessons he learned from some mistakes he made in the events in Star Trek VI in 2393) are not a great fit with the Unification story. The episode also suffered due to the tediuos "B Plot" involving the Enterprise crew as they tracked down the stolen Vulcan ship.

"can pay more attention to things like how happy I am to see Sela again."

WHAT? You mean that one-dimensional character played by the one-dimensional actress Denise Crosby? The same ridiculously conceived character who is inexplicably a high ranking Romulan soldier, despite her very obvious half-human characteristics (which the Romulans would not respect since they loathe humans)? Wait a minute...they did accept Shinzon as their Praetor so I guess anything is possible when the Romulans are written poorly
